Content posted on Aether is actually there forever, but it drops out of view when it "goes stale" after 6 months of non-interaction. You could open the database and try and find it.

The client default is to stop showing things after 6 months but this can be changed. This is good for the network, as the less it has to show, the faster it can remain.

In the settings json files, you can set the storage size you are willing to keep for Aether. Storage is relatively cheap these days.Aether is text only and text compresses very efficiently.

I could choose to keep a large amount of Aether data, others might not want to. It would be my way of supporting the infrastructure and holding my interests.

The need for permanent storage hasn't yet been solved on Aether. I think the best way forward for that is through IPFS pinning. (I think IPFS pinning for images/memes is the best solution too.)

This would mean integrating Aether with another application protocol. There are some Free software projects which might have some useful code for this purpose:

You do realize that this Sub is for Goats on Aether, don't you? Presumably, people here would be totally fine with using the Aether client.

And why are people fine with Aether?

* Peer-to-Peer - yes, that is right
* Botnet - That is not true
* The Aether client is the infrastructure
* Aether is text only - you can verify this by auditing the code yourself
* It is very difficult to establish which Aether node belongs to whom

You seem OK with everybody on talk.lol exposing their IP address to the website owner.

I see it as trying to keep Voat alive. Some Goats are becoming accustomed even resigned to having their platform sunk every couple of years.

That is neither necessary nor desirable, and I find it unacceptable. Voat should move onto firm ground. We need a sturdy, stable, durable, anonymous, Free platform, and since Aether's infrastructure consists of the community that use it, I can't see a better choice at the moment.

I am not referring to you or the others in this thread here, but the longer I have looked at this situation, the more I think Goats are followers like people on Reddit. This is a surprise to me, but a lot of people just want others to provide content for them and sit back and "watch the TV". That is a pretty sad state of affairs considering what a place Voat is.

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

Really? Which communities there did you join? Did you even post anything?

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

That is right. You can copy the whole folder, but that can become quite large, Gigabytes, if you use Aether a lot.

It is a good idea to backup those files securely, in case they are corrupted or you need to use your account on a different machine.

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=62856cd2f201b

That was an intelligent thing to do. I hope you spend more time on Aether! You would like it.

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

Thanks for looking. It is a bit confusing, due to inconsistency with naming conventions.

The main Voat community on Aether is /b/Voat

aether://board/f2c944108971c509c3718a43e8bc77d95d3591746241b6a490e537f00122d98d
/b/Voat, like all communities, is NSFW by default, so you would need to search in Communities for that and also check the "Search NSFW".

There is also a community started by the same person who created this sub here:

/b/Goats_from_Voat
aether://board/b44748cb19abf439800d6b0e9f84aca2d12e358d9c75f7665f5197443c41482a

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

Aether isn't Dead On Arrival. Far from it. On the otherhand, an http site like this one is doomed, in the same way voat.co was and in the same way the chans were doomed, and in the same way that DailyStormer is hounded from domain to domain.

I want Voat to prosper and grow into something bigger. If it keeps having the rug pulled out from under it, it will be kept small. You can have a permanent infrastructure with Aether, anonymity and Free Speech.

If you have just started playing with the interface, there are bound to be some teething problems.

I hope you go over to Aether and give it a try.

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

The default is that the content drops out of view after 6 months of no interaction. If people interact with the content, for example by replying, it gains another 6 months of viewing time. You can change the settings too, as it is Free Software.

Aether uses few resources. It is text only, so the bandwidth is minimal.

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

This sub is for Goats interested in Aether. They might be curious to try it. Your feedback was helpful. I suppose I ought to have posted the direct link too, next time!

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

Haha! I hope you have another moment :)

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

You might need to let the client find the network and become up-to-date. You might need to subscribe to some communities too. If you look at the status at the bottom left, you will hopefully be green and reaching the network. Check to see if you have some incoming connections.
By default, communities are NSFW, so you would need to include those in your search and try them too.

For example, check out:

/b/Vaccines
/b/Search
/b/Politics
/b/Science
/b/TechnologyNewsNetwork

etc

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

Sorry about that! The Sub / Community is /b/Politics
There is a Voat community /b/Voat

If you use the search tool and put in the ID
aether://board/f2c944108971c509c3718a43e8bc77d95d3591746241b6a490e537f00122d98d

And then "show NSFW Subs" you should see it.

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

Thank you so much, @blumen4alles. This is a very good suggestion!

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

I think talk.lol prevents us from posting an Aether link. If it doesn't, you should see it in the line below:

aether://board/a570802f2c5f35dff6b47c2a5db8bb2eea65d1994ad18f038ac6c6599d8a6533/thread/52436f6e6423fb5cfccba02739378c9a0809879389296b32eb4e202af4476c5b

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=628a93198b892

It might appear that there is no content, as by default, communities on Aether are NSFW, and you need to actively enable search for NSFW too in order to find these communities.

/b/Voat is here:

aether://board/f2c944108971c509c3718a43e8bc77d95d3591746241b6a490e537f00122d98d

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=6254d59c3e33c

It is a very good place to be. The more people on Voat who realize this the better

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=6254d59c3e33c

Hi, I_am_baal
There is a Voat community on Aether:
aether://board/f2c944108971c509c3718a43e8bc77d95d3591746241b6a490e537f00122d98d

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=6254d59c3e33c

A clumsy way to acheive that would be to name things with a prefix. For example, instead of /b/Funny, which would be for normal people, as far as normal goes on aether!, you could have /b/voat-Funny. Instead of /b/Linux, you could have /b/voat-Linux.

Aetherians would see the prefix and have an idea of what sort of sub it was.

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=6254d59c3e33c

On Aether at the moment low moderation is the norm as there is currently little need for moderation. As the number of Aether users keeps growing, the moderation system there will come into its own.

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=625b78991f228

No, it does not support AV1. (AV1 is great, by the way, and hopefully we shall all soon have AV1 encode hardware.)

What LaGrange will endeavour to do is open an AV1 link in an associated software package, like VLC or whatever you are using on your computer.

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=625b78991f228

The only person on Aether who can delete your account is you.

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=625b78991f228

I love Aether. If there is something I would like improved, I would say, integrate support for IPFS pinning

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=62687e18be225

Brave, and any HTTP compliant web-browser, will take you to the Aether website, where you can download the Aether client. You need a client that supports the Aether protocol in order to follow links to content on Aether.

https://getaether.net

/v/Goats_on_Aether viewpost?postid=6271c46fdc645

It is like an anonymous, distributed Usenet that supports Free Speech and doesn't require any infrastructure except the client you use to interact with it.

There is a whole page explaining the rationale behind its design decisions, if anybody is curious:
