I'm pretty sure that a good portion of that defraction (diffusion?), whichever, is due to the atmosphere and you lose those soft shadows without.

I heard plenty about it. Be aware that a lot of the internet traffic on this topic is driven by angry chineese bot(bug people bots, not digital ones) farms.

What they released is tritium, one of the least radioactive of the radioactive materials. The radiation emitted by tritium can't even get through the skin. It is very weak. This is one of the reasons tritium is used in spacecraft RTGs.
