I locked myself and the missus out of the house yesterday. Cost $160 Aus to get a locksmith.

submitted by paul_neri to Rants 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 06:34:52 ago (+17/-3)     (Rants)

We have an internal door to the laundry and in 15 years of living in the place didn't notice it was lockable until I inadvertently locked it. Pushed the button in as I opened and closed it. Suddenly the missus and I were homeless except for a laundry. It was terrifying. We had spare keys outside to the outside door of the laundry, which is the door we always used to enter the house, but only one spare key to the front door (which was on my key ring in the house which I couldn't access) because we don't use it and certainly no key to the internal door I managed to lock.

Went next door to our new neighbours and asked if I could use their phone and this very competent young lady who was visiting found the locksmith's number and put me on to him. But he had another job and was unsure if he could come. We were locked out. Had no money and it's very cold at night. Anyway the locksmith turned up and he wasn't happy about it. He couldn't open the front door and after much trying managed to open the internal door I locked.

Today I went into town to get three new spare keys for the front door ($32 Aus). Came home and not one worked. Went back and the man worked on them again and said he was 99.9% sure they'd work but the only sure way of matching the keys to the lock was to have the lock. Came home and not one worked. So I took out the lock and brought that back to the shop. The man said it was a paper-width of difference that was causing the trouble. Took the lock and keys back home and after much effort (I'm not mechanically skilled) reinstalled the lock - upside down and the thing wouldn't lock. After much effort took it out again and repositioned it so the button-lock worked and after much effort got the stupid thing in the door where it worked and the new keys worked too.

Moral of the story - how one tiny action (me accidentally pushing a button) can have such consequences. Anxiety, effort and cost. I also bought a box of chocolates ($20 Aus) for the people next door. The overall cost ... $200!

$200 (aus) is about 133 real dollars considering the exchange rate. That really isn’t too bad considering you had a locksmith make a house call.

He couldn't open the front door

A locksmith that can't pick locks at that, so I guess he got what he paid for.

I live in a 100 percent white area. I haven’t carried my door keys on me in 20 years. Not even sure where they are.

^ This.

The only reason I even know what our house keys look like is that I put in a new door handle recently. They're still sitting in a drawer fastened together with a little ring, the way they arrived in the package.

Well, that was a silly thing to do.

It was an accident. Shit happens, goddamnit! Do you have a spare key secreted on your car? No...so you could be locked out of it at Phillip Island in the middle of nowhere. Well I do have a spare car key hidden under the car!

May have been cheaper to break a window.

My (at the time) two year old locked himself in our walk-in closet. For some reason, previous owner decided that door, which is only accessible by the master bathroom, should be lockable with a key.

I was gone, so wife grabbed a hammer and busted the handle. Didn't damage the hollow-core door and that child never played with locks again.

Possibly but I doubt it.

[ - ] FreeinTX 7 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 06:54:38 ago (+7/-0)

Yup. Never hand lock a door. Always use the key to lock it.

[ - ] JudyStroyer 7 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 08:16:44 ago (+7/-0)

I use the “look at the keys in my fucking hand as I close the door” method. Hasn’t failed me yet. Although i can be in my house in minutes if needed without breaking anything. I also have a house key hidden on my truck that requires no key to access.

house key hidden on my truck...

Noted...

Understatement of the century

You are a poofter who’s a useless eater. I’m sad your ordeal didn’t last long enough

Any man should know how to get into/out of his home. And have a plan for when you are locked out. For each lock in and out of the house.

It's basic prep work for yourself, and it's easy. Really basic. Like having a spare tire and the tools to replace it in your car that you test out once a year.

I mean, shit man, it's so basic that children learn it before they come of age. It's one of the reasons every teen gets a shit-box for a starter car.

Don't rub it in. We only use one day to get in/out of the house and had spare keys for it. It was the hidden trap of the lockable internal door that caught us from left field!

Bro.... Can I call you bro I don't want to assume your gender after this post. You cant pick locks? You cant install a lock? The fuck.

[ - ] paul_neri [op] 1 point 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 18:35:46 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah you an call me bro. I'm a gifted writer not a gifted tradie!

[ - ] albatrosv15 5 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 09:38:25 ago (+5/-0)

Yeah it pays to know how to lockpick. My knowledge saved some money for myself and some other people. It's a long term investment. Nobody needs it, until they suddenly do.

[ - ] JudyStroyer 5 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 08:11:35 ago (+6/-1)

How are you still breathing you useless faggot?

Thanks bro.

Next time this happens, go to you truck, get a hammer and smash the doorknob off. Inside there is the little flat pice of metal you can turn to open the door. Then go to the hardware store and get a new knob for $10 US.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 3 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 12:25:34 ago (+3/-0)

It’s like all you dumbfucks without AAA roadside assistance.
I have that for my who,e family and I have a realtor's type lockbox with extra keys in it.
That was $35 US.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 3 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 17:09:39 ago (+3/-0)

you dumbfucks without AAA roadside assistance.

Thing is, I'm better at it than they are. And I'm likely carrying more tools as well.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 2 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 17:51:50 ago (+2/-0)

I just think it’s lame when someone loses half a day at work getting a ride to fix their car on the side of the road when $80 a year can cover that for you, four times. I’ve been a AAA member for 30 years. It’s well worth it.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 2 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 18:45:59 ago (+2/-0)

Getting a ride? With the tools right there? Half a day? Are you a lazy nigger with no skills?

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 19:31:12 ago (+1/-0)

Dude, don’t be a dick.
I’m 54 years old and don’t care to work on shit on the side of the road. I have more tools than I need, but I have way more money than time. Way more. I’m White. I pay people to shit I don’t want to do, so I can do the shit I want to do.
wtf is your problem?

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic 3 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 12:24:10 ago (+3/-0)

I don't get how people lock themselves out of their house and vehicle. I have a system in place to ensure this never happens and I consider anyone whom it happens to to be very stupid.

[ - ] paul_neri [op] 1 point 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 18:37:22 ago (+1/-0)

Ouch! It was a freak event, goddamnit. We never noticed the internal door was lockable.

[ - ] Pasty 3 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 11:39:38 ago (+3/-0)

I just call things like that the idiot tax.

[ - ] paul_neri [op] 1 point 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 18:37:50 ago (+1/-0)

Fair enough.

[ - ] Pasty 1 point 5 monthsAug 2, 2024 04:23:22 ago (+1/-0)

We all got to pay it at some point. I got a two gallon lava lamp that only works a quarter of the year because of how long the thing takes to heat up because I thought it looked cool.

[ - ] JoesLegHair 2 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 11:03:16 ago (+2/-0)

Get a key safe and find a place to hide it.

[ - ] Rowdybme 2 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 08:17:25 ago (+3/-1)

Should've checked out the lock pocking lawyer on YouTube.

[ - ] Conspirologist 2 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 07:18:58 ago (+2/-0)

This is weird. When I make spare keys, they always work.

[ - ] JudyStroyer 7 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 08:13:14 ago (+7/-0)

Maybe you indians have figured that art out. Still have a hard time larping as IT and White people tho.

[ - ] Ragnar 3 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 10:24:26 ago (+3/-0)

It’s because they use the same lock

[ - ] Not_a_redfugee 1 point 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 15:46:46 ago (+1/-0)

Thats why I carry a couple flimsy plastic cards in my wallet. If a door is not deadbolted and the lock/latch is not very high security, chances are I can get in in like 5 seconds by sliding the card between the latch and the notch in the doorframe.

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 12:46:52 ago (+1/-0)

How much did you pay for the abo bull locked inside

[ - ] bossman131 0 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:21:46 ago (+0/-0)

Congratulations, a lesson learned is not a lesson learned if it is not learned the hard way.
Now you now.

[ - ] dass 0 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 16:36:03 ago (+0/-0)

You are full of shit. Get more reckt neri !!

[ - ] Nosferatjew 0 points 5 monthsAug 1, 2024 14:37:30 ago (+0/-0)

At least one coded keypad lock on an exterior door would have prevented this. Good (enough) coded locks cost less than a locksmith, and take about 10-15min to install/set up. Get to work.
