Back in the day, I was working as a mechanic on a construction crew for installing turbines. Well, my assistant was a mexican dude, roughly same age as me. We were working overnight as it was on the canadian border in the middle of winter and we would keep the equipment running 24/7 basically. (Ever try to start a diesel that has no glow plugs and block heater when is fifteen below?) it was usually 2 tractor trailers, 2 backhoes, 2 D6s, and two massive trenchers for burying cable, and two skid steers. Not to mention the crane and articulating loader back at the yard.

Well, long story short we walked into a gas station at 230 in the morning and there were about 8 border agents sitting at tables talking and drinking coffee. I walked in first, Danny(the mexican, no joke) walked in behind me. As soon as we get inside, I walk near them and say “caught one for ya, boys!” Danny laughed his ass off and says “you fuckin dick!” The border agents laughed so fucking hard. This was almost twenty years ago. I actually enjoyed working with him. He knew I was racist as fuck and we would banter back and forth. All in all though, he was a genuinely good dude. Had a wife and kids and completely lived off what he made. He would have done anything for me and vice versa. We were a team for a few years traveling the country doing this work. The dude worked hard as hell and never complained. Always wearing a dress shirt like it was a flannel. We’ve seen some shit, were both openly racist to each other, and that actually made us trust each other more somehow.
