Got this for an amazing price, it's a 2018 with low hours. The short mast really benefits me since my ceiling height is low as well.

Part of running your own business, is dealing with shitty clients that are late to pay their bills.
It's sad to see a company fail not because of shortage of work or bad craftmanship, but simply due to mismanagement.
I'll find new clients. There are not many machine shops around here, and the ones that are are all supper busy.

Yankies call a bolt that fits a 13 mm socket a 13 mm bolt... A 8mm bolt with hex head takes a 13 mm wrench or socket. No one calls a 1/2" bolt (1/2" diameter threads) a 3/4" bolt. Why only be stupid when it comes to metric sizes.     (Machining)

I've got a small manual lathe that I bought second hand. My father taught me the technique of taking up backlash. When you need to move the top slide out, to increase the diameter of the cut, move it too far, then screw it in to the required setting. This ensures that every setting is set pushing the top slide in. This technique works, but is annoying. On a worn old lathe it is essential.

But how does modern CNC machinery work? It seems to zip back and forth by turning the lead screw, with out regard to backlash. I think there was a short era of using two nuts, held apart by a strong spring that both takes out the backlash and creates lots of friction. Then came recirculating ball screws. The rolling of the ball bearings solves the problem of friction. Accurate manufacturing of the ball race helps, and finally backlash is eliminated by having the nut done up tight.

Then I saw this video, which looks like it is the next stage, with all the baby thread rollers rotating around the lead screw. They claim repeatability of 0.006mm. I guess this is the possible error between screwing in and screwing out to your setting. I'm not involved in this technology, I just like to watch and keep up to keep in touch with how things work.

This is Part 2 of our Franna Crane project! We are working on making the new boom lift cylinders and in this video we get both the cylinder rods and barrels machined and welded. We show the step by step process of machining up the new rod eyes, machining the cylinder rods and machining the barrels. Stay tuned for Part 3 when we get these cylinders completed and assembled.

Even today, this factory can completely overhaul old steam locomotives, or build brand new ones if requested.

The motor on my lathe just let the magic smoke out.     (Machining)

Off course it's when I am working on a rush job. Why else would I be working on a Sunday.
I was making a light facing cut, when mid cut the pitch of the motor changed. I just had another inch to go so i let it run. After the cut, i noticed smoke coming out from the motor. Casing temperature was 65 degrees C. According to the tag, running temp should be 45 C.
I have been shopping around for a bigger lathe. Something used, American or European made. Bugs me that i am going to have to invest around $600 on this old one first, that money should have been going towards the new lathe.

How did you find your way into this field? What kind of work are you actually doing on the daily? Who is your favorite Machining personality, and why is it AVE? Are there any financial incentives behind handcrank in this day and age, or is there only money in mass production in China? Is there any production to speak of being done Stateside?

I know enough to know I dont know shit, but I would be able to die happy knowing I've tried my best to see American Manufacturing become more than just manufacturing the blueprints that are sent to China
