Robby Steinhardt, violinist and co-lead vocalist of the rock outfit Kansas, died Saturday, July 17th. He was 71.

Steinhardt’s wife, Cindy Steinhardt, confirmed his death on Facebook. Cindy said Steinhardt was admitted to the hospital with acute pancreatitis in May. Not long after, he went into acute septic shock and was placed on life support, and although the outlook was “very grave” at the time, he managed to recover. However, several months later, just as he was about to be released from medical care and moved to a rehab center, Steinhardt suffered another sepsis.

Jimmy Dean wrote and composed this in collaboration with Roy Acuff. Dean wrote this on a flight from New York to Nashville when he realized he needed another song for his recording session. Released in September 1961, by the beginning of November it went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Dean the 1962 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording. Dean wrote this about fellow actor John Mentoe ("Destry Rides Again"), who was 6' 5" tall. According to Dean's roommate (at the time), the song was intended to be a joke. The words "At the bottom of this mine lies one hell of a man – Big John." (Some versions of the song change the last line to "lies a big, big man" to replace what was at the time considered to be borderline profane language.)

Floyd Cramer, a famous country/gospel pianist ("Last Date"), was hired to play the piano on the recording but wound up hitting a chunk of steel with a hammer instead. It was Floyd's idea to make the switch.

Its 1962 sequel, "The Cajun Queen," describes the arrival of "Queenie," Big John's Cajun Queen, who rescues John from the mine and marries him. Eventually, they have "110 grandchildren." The sequel's events are more exaggerated than the first, extending the story into the realm of tall tales. In June 1962, the story continued (and evidently concludes) with the arrival of "Little Bitty Big John" learning about his father's act of heroism.

Alvin Lee and Ten Years After evolved through several personnel and name changes: Ivan Jay and the Jaycats, Blues Trip, Blues Yard. They finally settled on Ten Years After – in honour of Elvis Presley, one of Lee's idols (this was ten years after Presley's successful year 1956). From a guitarist's perspective, the 1970 Woodstock film, which documents the highs and lows of the August 1969 Woodstock Festival, has several highlights. There's Jimi Hendrix's immortal take on "The Star-Spangled Banner," a mesmerizing performance by newcomers Santana, Richie Havens' thumb-fretting madness and Pete Townshend's Gibson SG acrobatics with the Who. But for a full-on blues-rocking experience, there's no beating Ten Years After's adrenaline-fueled reading of "I'm Going Home." The performance, an intense nod to vintage blues and Fifties rock and roll, featured the lightning-fast fretwork of Ten Years After frontman Alvin Lee.

Alvin Lee: "Seriously, though, I never really tried to play fast. It kind of developed from the adrenalin rush of the hundreds of gigs I did long before Woodstock. They called me "Captain Speedfingers" and such, but I didn't take it seriously. There were many guitarists faster than me—Django Reinhardt, Barney Kessel, John McLaughlin and Joe Pass to name a few. The solo in the movie sounds pretty rough to me these days, but it had the energy, and that was what Ten Years After were all about at the time. However, I often wonder what would have happened if they had used “I Can't Keep From Crying, Sometimes” in the movie instead of "I’m Going Home.""

"Strangely enough, I wasn't into fast guitarists. I preferred Peter Green’s subtle touch. I saw him with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers at the Marquee Club in London and was very impressed. He was the only guitarist I've ever seen to turn the volume control on his guitar down during a solo."
