Ian Tyson - The Goodnight-Loving Trail (1984)
(www.youtube.com)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UhJsgaSXwIThis was written by a big ol' lefty commie named Utah Phillips, more frequently remembered by his telling the "moose turd pie" joke played on the Dr. Demento Show for many years. You can find recordings on jewtube of him performing the song, but I think Ian Tyson's version is beautiful and I prefer it.
I saw Utah Phillips perform live in -- where else? -- Santa Cruz, California about two decades ago. He was a good songwriter and a great storyteller, but a huge commie. He advocated for the Wobblies (IWW) and "direct action", i.e., the sort of tactics described by Saul Alinsky in "Rules for Radicals". Utah did a lot of other music, but I won't listen to it because I have a hard time separating the art from the artist.
