'Free Lucy Letby' expert linked to flawed review into serial killer's hospital baby unit     (www.dailymail.co.uk)

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14365261/Lucy-Letby-expert-review-hospital-baby-unit.html

An expert lobbying for Lucy Letby’s release was in charge of the professional body that carried out a flawed review into the neo-natal unit where the nurse murdered babies.

Professor Neena Modi was present on Tuesday when it was claimed ‘new’ evidence proved no infants were killed and that Letby had been the victim of a miscarriage of justice.

But yesterday it emerged Professor Modi was president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) from 2015 to 2018 during which time hospital bosses at the Countess of Chester Hospital asked the organisation for help instead of calling in police.

The public inquiry into Letby’s crimes has heard that the RCPCH should never have agreed to carry out the review, in September 2016, once they learned about the suspicions of doctors.

A redacted version of its report – which omitted references to Letby and instead flagged up staffing shortages, problems with the transfer of babies to other hospitals and other issues – was used by hospital managers to exonerate Letby, discredit doctors, mislead parents and delay the police probe.

The RCPCH, at the Thirlwall Inquiry, accepted the review ‘contributed to uncertainty and lack of clarity that bedevilled the response’ to the spike in deaths.

Fiona Scolding KC, for the RCPCH, also apologised to doctors who tried to blow the whistle on Letby for failing to ‘sufficiently support’ them and acknowledged the ‘stress and damage’ caused.

Yesterday a source claimed Professor Modi was not a ‘disinterested party’ in the Letby case.

It is alleged she has a ‘personal interest’ in suggesting poor medical care, and not the convicted killer nurse, was responsible for the baby deaths because ‘she was in charge of the RCPCH when it conducted the discredited review’.

The source added: ‘It was the tool which delayed the police being called in and was also used to bully the paediatricians into apologising to Letby and to try to justify her return to work.’

E-mails on the inquiry site reveal Professor Modi was in contact with doctors at the Countess in 2018 after the start of the police investigation.

She failed on Tuesday to mention this, or that she was at the helm of the RCPCH at the time of Letby’s crimes, and instead insisted she was there in a ‘personal’ capacity.

Canadian Dr Shoo Lee, whose 1989 research paper on air embolism featured prominently at Letby’s original trial, said evidence compiled by 14 experts concluded all the babies had died or collapsed ‘due to natural causes or bad medical care’.

He added: ‘We did not find any murders.’

The RCPCH has said it ‘does not hold a position’ over Letby’s convictions. Professor Modi was contacted for comment.

Late multimillionaire banking tycoon Evelyn de Rothschild is accused of exploiting his position to sexually abuse female members of staff     (www.dailymail.co.uk)

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14361493/Late-multimillionaire-banking-tycoon-Evelyn-Rothschild-accused-exploiting-position-sexually-abuse-female-members-staff.html

Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, one of Britain's most influential financiers and a former adviser to Queen Elizabeth II, has been accused of sexual abuse and harassment by multiple women who worked with him at NM Rothschild in the 1990s.

The shocking allegations have surfaced two years after his death at the age of 91, with former employees claiming they felt unable to speak out while he was alive due to his immense power within the bank and the British establishment.

According to multiple sources, including eight individuals with direct knowledge of events, Sir Evelyn allegedly exploited his position as chairman of NM Rothschild to target junior female employees, as per The Guardian.

Women have come forward with disturbing claims that he subjected them to serious sexual assault and harassment at the bank's London headquarters, just a stone's throw from the Bank of England.

One woman alleged she was violently assaulted by him while working as a young staff member.

Another claimed he put his hands inside her top and underwear to grope her.

A third recounted being forced to perform a sex act on him while he sat on his desk.

It is alleged that Sir Evelyn would 'take his pick' of junior female staff, luring them with promises of career advancement before subjecting them to unwanted sexual advances.

Women who resisted or attempted to raise concerns were reportedly dismissed and given financial settlements in exchange for their silence.

De Rothschild was one of the most powerful figures in British banking, leading NM Rothschild for more than 20 years and growing the firm's assets from £40million to £4.6billion.

He was knighted in 1989 and became a close confidant of the Royal Family, frequently attending events such as Royal Ascot with the Queen.

Beyond banking, he served on the boards of The Economist and The Daily Telegraph, further cementing his influence in British society.

His vast wealth and connections meant few dared to challenge him.

One woman claimed that he would assess whether a female employee was 'well connected' before deciding if she was 'fair game.'

Another insider described NM Rothschild under his leadership as 'his kingdom' where he exercised 'absolute rule.'

The allegations raise serious questions about the workplace culture within the Rothschild banking empire.

Sources suggest that misconduct by Sir Evelyn may have gone unchecked for decades, with some staff aware of financial settlements made to women who had been harassed or assaulted.

When contacted by the newspaper, lawyers acting for Rothschild & Co, which succeeded NM Rothschild, stated that an 'initial review of their records' found 'nothing' regarding the allegations.

However, they also admitted they lacked enough information to investigate further.

A spokesperson for the bank said: 'We deal with any complaint quickly and decisively. We prize the culture we have developed over the years, and there is no place for such behaviour in our culture.'

However, the emerging allegations suggest that in the past, victims had little support or recourse when confronting powerful figures like Sir Evelyn.

MailOnline has approached Rothschild & Co for comment.

These revelations add to the growing list of historical sexual misconduct cases involving powerful men, including former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed, who has also been accused of abuse after his death.

Al Fayed, who died aged 94 in 2023, was hit with an avalanche of rape and assault claims after at least two former Harrods workers told a BBC documentary they had been raped or molested by the Egyptian tycoon.

Meanwhile last year, the Met Police revealed they were investigating 40 new allegations against Al Fayed and others since the BBC documentary.

The 40 new allegations related to 40 alleged victims and were in addition to allegations police were aware of before the BBC's investigation and documentary, Scotland Yard said.

Sir Evelyn's funeral was attended by numerous high-profile figures, and his eulogy was delivered by former US President Bill Clinton.

At the time, his legacy was celebrated for his financial acumen, philanthropy, and close ties to the Royal Family.

However, these posthumous accusations now cast a dark shadow over his life's work.

The allegations have reignited calls for greater transparency and accountability within elite financial institutions, where power imbalances have long enabled abuse to go unchecked.

As the Rothschild family and the banking world grapple with these shocking claims, many will be left wondering how such behaviour remained hidden for so long - and whether justice can ever be served for the women who suffered in silence.

Jaw-dropping sum Norwegian Cruises hit couple with after they sought flu treatment on-board free Caribbean trip     (www.dailymail.co.uk)

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14355567/Jaw-dropping-sum-Norwegian-Cruises-hit-couple-sought-flu-treatment-board-free-Caribbean-trip.html

A Minnesota couple's dream vacation turned into a nightmare after a simple flu treatment on their free Norwegian cruise left them with an jaw-dropping medical bill.

Mike Cameron and his girlfriend Tamra Masterman, from Braham, Minnesota, had won a complimentary cruise aboard Norwegian Cruise Line's Encore ship.

They set sail from Miami on January 5 for what should have been a luxurious vacation in the Caribbean.

But instead, Cameron was left with a whopping $47,000 medical bill - and on the road to bankruptcy.

The tropical retreat quickly took a turn for the worse when Cameron fell ill with the flu, forcing him to seek treatment at the ship's medical center.

While he recovered after three days, the real shock came later when he received a $47,000 bill for his care.

Norwegian immediately charged two credit cards the couple had on file, maxing out both.

In a scathing Facebook post, Masterman detailed their nightmare experience.

When confronted about the shocking bill, Norwegian defended their pricing in a letter to Masterman. They said the bill was 'closely comparable to other cruise lines and is what we believe to be fair and reasonable.'

President Neri horrified while on vacation, witnessing the moment a dolphin dies after leaping out of a pool at Mexican resort and smashing down into concrete floor.     (www.dailymail.co.uk)

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14355343/Horrifying-moment-dolphin-dies-leaping-pool-Mexican-resort-smashing-concrete-floor.html

This is the horrifying moment a dolphin died after leaping out of a pool at a Mexican resort and smashing down into the concrete floor.

Footage filmed by a tourist shows a group of dolphins jumping out of the water in sync during a show at the Barcelo Riviera Maya hotel in Mexico in January.

But one of them can be seen missing the mark and hitting a narrow sliver of concrete separating the big pool from a smaller one as the crowd gasped in shock.

The dolphin appeared lifeless as it lied by the side of the pool, with a trainer rushing over to check on the marine mammal.

Some of the other dolphins then emerged from the water, appearing to check on their pod mate.

The dolphin's horrifying death during a show has caused outrage, with animal rights organisations including Animal Heroes, Dolphin Freedom, Marea and Oceanos De Vida Libre announcing its death in a joint statement.

'For a year now, the organisations Animal Heroes, Dolphin Freedom, Marea, and Oceanos De Vida Libre have maintained a permanent campaign demanding the closure of this dolphinarium, which is one of the smallest in Mexico,' they said.

'We have delivered letters to both Barcelo in Playa del Carmen and in Mexico City, as well as letters from schoolchildren in Baja California pleading for an end to the exploitation of dolphins, yet they have never been willing to receive us.'

The statement continued: 'In addition, we have exposed other tragedies, such as the deaths of the dolphins Alex and Plata in just one year, which were never properly investigated.

'We have shown that the dolphin pool is smaller than those for humans, despite the fact that in the wild they swim vast distances and depths, that they have no shelter from the sun, and so on.'

Activist Phil Demers also shared the footage on his UrgentSeas social media accounts, telling Yahoo News on Saturday that the horrifying video of the dolphin smashing down into the concrete left him in 'absolute shock'.

'This particular incident is one of the worst. It really, truly is. Even if it [had] survived, its health [would have been] severely compromised,' he said.

'It's completely inexcusable, it's something that never would happen in the wild. It just eliminates any rationale they should exist in these concrete tanks.'

Mr Demers previously published drone footage showing the concrete tanks at the Barcelo Riviera Maya hotel and said the dolphin jumping to its death showed that the tanks were too small and the dolphins should be removed.

The Barcelo Riviera Maya hotel in Mexico charges about £54 ($67) for dolphin 'friendly' encounters, which buys tourists the chance to shake a dolphin's fin and hug it.

For another £12 ($15), people are allowed to ride the marine mammals, Yahoo News reports.

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has opened an investigation.

Adam Hastings and Reece Upton, gay couple who sexually abused schoolboy then camped out in woods for two months to avoid capture are jailed     (www.dailymail.co.uk)

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14351945/Gay-couple-preyed-schoolboy-wouldnt-talk-sexual-abuse-jailed-camping-woods-avoid-manhunt.html

A gay couple who preyed on a schoolboy in a two-month period have been jailed after camping out in the woods to avoid the nationwide manhunt for them.

A court heard Adam Hastings and Reece Upton plied the young boy with cash, vapes and energy drinks while using him for sex.

The men, who worked together at a shop, went on the run after one of them was initially arrested by police who were told about the 15-year-old boy's ordeal after being groomed.

A judge heard that Hastings, 28, and Upton, 29, were in a relationship and lived together on a houseboat on the Kennet and Avon Canal.

They targeted the schoolboy and decided to groom him for sexual activity, a sentencing hearing at Reading Crown Court was told.

The court heard that Thames Valley Police launched a nationwide appeal to find the pair after they went 'off grid'.

Following an intelligence-led search involving dog and drone units and the help of the public, the pair were eventually arrested in Devizes, Wiltshire, on June 24 last year.

Prosecutor William Eaglestone told the court the defendants took advantage of the 15-year-old schoolboy's vulnerability.

Mr Eaglestone said there was grooming behaviour and the victim was given vapes, cannabis, energy drinks and cash.

On one occasion, Hastings gave the boy £50 after sexual activity and told him not to tell anyone about the incident.

On another occasion, the victim was told to give the defendants oral sex.

Hastings, of Kingston St. Michael, Chippenham, Wiltshire, engaged in further penetrative sexual activity with the child.

The court heard that the defendants had been working at a shop in Newbury, during the period of their offending.

Mr Eaglestone spoke of the defendants' disappearance, saying: 'When Upton was released from the police station he and Hastings spent a night in a hotel before vanishing - not using their bank cards or mobile phones.'

The police were aware of the victim's allegations at that point and they were eventually tracked down in Devizes. They had been camping in the woods, the court heard.

Judge Jane Rowley said the defendants clearly feared that the net was closing around them.

Reading from the victim's personal statement, Mr Eaglestone said: 'He lost a lot of confidence in himself and would often dwell on what had happened.'

Derek Barry, defending Hastings, told the court his client had previously been Sectioned under the Mental Health Act and suffered from PTSD. He also accepted responsibility for his actions, the court heard.

Mr Barry told the judge: 'I would invite you to give him real credit for that.'

Jonathan Mitchell, defending Upton, told the judge his client was heavily influenced by the misuse of alcohol and cannabis during the offending period - even drinking spirits upon waking up in the morning.

'Mr Upton, now having a clear mind to reappraise his situation and the offence he has caused and the damage he has done - in my submission it must surely be viewed as a standalone course of conduct that he will not likely engage in again.'

Judge Rowley said: 'The facts of this case - as are in many of these such cases - quite startling.'

Speaking to Hastings, she added: 'You lack any true meaningful remorse for your offences and continue to minimise your responsibility according to the maker of that report.'

Hastings was jailed on five counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Upton was sentenced for one count of sexual activity with a child. The charges related to incidents in Newbury, Berkshire, between April and June last year.

Hastings was jailed for nine years with an extended licence period of three years. Upton was jailed for four years.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14346445/thailand-holiday-hell-road-sign-leaned.html

A British tourist's dream getaway to Thailand spiraled into a living nightmare after a bizarre chain of events saw him assaulted, jailed twice, and stripped of his belongings – all for accidentally damaging an entrance sign.

Andrew Hopkins, 55, was staying in an Airbnb in sunny Pattaya when he decided to take a late-night stroll through the neighbourhood.

But it turned into the beginning of a harrowing ordeal that would follow him back home to the UK and haunt him for months.

Speaking to the MailOnline, Andrew recalled the horrors of his southeast Asian holiday from hell after we last week showed footage of him handcuffed to his prison cell.

As Andrew made his way out of his apartment he mistakenly knocked into the entrance sign of the neighbours' residence.

At 21st 8lbs, the tourist admitted to damaging the sign after walking into it, but nothing could have prepared him for the consequences he would face as a result of his innocent accident.

Before Andrew could process what had happened, two furious security guards arrived and began shouting at him in Thai.

Unable to understand, he made the universal gesture of submission, apologised, and even offered to pay for the damage. But that wasn't enough.

Moments later, the local police arrived at the scene - and things took a violent turn.

'They threw me onto the back of a pick-up truck and locked me in a cell for around 36 hours,' Andrew told the MailOnline.

'An English guy in there told me to just do what they say, and they'd let me go. Eventually, an Italian man arrived and told me I had to pay 15,000 baht [£360] in cash to be released.'

The holidaymaker was marched to an ATM where he withdrew the money as officers menacingly peered over his shoulder.

After taking out the cash in a panic, Andrew was taken to Pattaya's central police station, where two senior officers took the money before setting him free.

But if he thought his troubles were over, he was wrong.

A video circulating online captured the inside of a Pattaya prison which horrifically saw fire ants and cockroaches roaming the dirty floors, 130 inmates stuffed into one room, and pregnant women handcuffed to cell bars.

Upon returning to his Airbnb, Andrew claims he was met with hostility.

The wife of the host was waiting at the front desk, furiously waving his key in his face while yelling at him that he had to leave.

'She told me they'd cancelled my booking and that I had to leave immediately,' he said.

'I was stunned, but I asked if I could at least take a shower and collect my things. They agreed.'

But stepping into his apartment, Andrew noticed something was very wrong.

'There was a funny chemical smell – I'm sure they tried to drug me. Someone had been inside, stripped the beds, and tossed my belongings into my suitcase. But worse, my money and valuables had vanished.'

He claims his Cooperative Bank debit card, MBNA credit card, phone chargers, and a hidden stash of £1,230 in cash, had all been stolen.

Confronting the woman only made things worse.

'She started screaming at me about smoking on the balcony. There was an ashtray out there – and I even had a video proving it.'

Before long, the Thai police showed up once again - and this time, they were even more brutal.

'They attacked me, handcuffed me to the back of a pickup, and hauled me off to jail again. This time, they stripped me of all my belongings and handcuffed me to the bars of my cell.'

Left lying on a grimy floor with his arm raised and bound to the bars if his prison cell, Andrew was forced to urinate over himself.

'I'm lying on the floor on my back in a pool of water. I need the toilet. I shouted for help, no one came,' he said.

'Eventually I had to urinate adding to the pool of liquid I was lying in. It was disgusting and there was no way to treat a human being'.

Recalling the experience, he said it was the most harrowing and dehumanising moment of his life - 'being stripped of my dignity having to lie in my own body fluids and being beaten up for no other reason than questioning where my money and valuables were'.

In desperation for his circumstances to change, Andrew began singing Country Roads, God Save the King and Half the World Away at the top of his voice.

Eventually, police officers released him, but his nightmare was far from over.

His Thai phone - a Galaxy s21, his bank cards, and more cash had all disappeared.

Worse still, his debit card had been used fraudulently to the tune of £450 – and his bank refused to refund him.

'When I told them to check CCTV from the 7-Eleven where it was used, they said they couldn't. So I'm just out of pocket,' he said.

And if Andrew's ordeal could not get any more dire, the £480 he had stashed in his pocket had also disappeared.

Andrew said he was never formally arrested by Thai police and was never given a phone call

'My charger had gone missing, and to cap it all off my trainers and flip flops were missing, so I was in my bare feet,' the disgruntled traveller said.

'The police gave me a pair of the most uncomfortable Adda flip flops - the one with the bit between the toes that I hate - but beggars can't be choosers'.

Andrew was 'strangely' handed £120 in cash before being, what he described as, booted out into the night.

'I was never formally arrested, never given a phone call,' he said.

Now back in the UK, he is still suffering from the fallout of the ordeal.

'I had to book a business-class flight home with Emirates for [£1,800 because I was in too much pain to sit down properly,' he said.

'I've had infections, muscle pain, and PTSD from what happened.'

He is now pursuing claims with Airbnb's insurers and his own travel insurance, while the UK Home Office has lodged a formal complaint with Thai authorities.

'Tourist's to Thailand have zero rights in Thailand, Thais honour other Thais, Tourist's are seen as marks to be fleeced and robbed at every opportunity,' he warned.

His final verdict on Thailand?

'They call it the Land of Smiles, but my experience is that they're only friendly while you're paying. Tourists are seen as easy targets to be fleeced and robbed.

'If you ever find yourself in trouble there – stay calm, don't raise your voice, and do not, under any circumstances, question their authority.'

A Georgia man was left in complete shock when he received a piece of paper in the mail after ordering an electric drill online.

Savannah resident Sylvester Franklin ordered the power tool from AliExpress \- an online retail service based in China - back in November, paying around $20.

Instead of sending the drill, the company shipped a printed-out picture of the item, folded it up, placed it inside the packaging and delivered it to Franklin.

'They sent me this. This is a picture of what they sent me,' Franklin told WTOC as he held up the paper displaying the black and green drill and its accompanying parts.

This was not the only item Franklin purchased from the website, as he told the outlet that he also bought a pressure washer.

'I paid $22.47 for a pressure washer, and this is what I get,' he said, holding up a small silver item. 'It's a screw.'

The frustrated customer has tried to get in contact with the retailer but he has still not received a refund for his purchases.

AliExpress is the subsidiary - or company controlled by a holding company - of AliBaba, also referred to as the 'Amazon of China.'

Sylvester Franklin ordered a power drill from AliExpess in November but all he was sent was a picture print out of the item he paid for

AliExpress - an online retail service based in China - is the subsidiary of AliBaba, also referred to as the 'Amazon of China.' (Pictured: File photo of AliExpress delivery locker)

The company was previously added to the list of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy in 2021 by the Office of the United States Trade Representative.

According to the Better Business Bureau, AliExpress has a D- rating and has failed 'to respond to 1,128 complaint(s) filed against the business.'

Upon further investigation, it appears that Franklin is not the first customer who has been scammed by the retailer before as Georgia's Consumer Protection Division (CPD) received three complaints against AliExpress in 2024 alone.

One customer, who paid more than $400 for a product, said they 'never received the item purchased' and were sent a 'fake tracking number' for it.

Of those three complaints, all the shoppers said their items were never delivered and they did not get their money back until they reported the issues to the CDP.

Meanwhile, Franklin is still trying to fight for his money back, and wants the public to use his unfortunate experience as a lesson.

'This is not good. This is real bad. All this is bad, you know what I mean?,' he told the outlet.

!

'Don't scam nobody. I don't like to get scammed because if you spend your money, you want to get what you paid for.'

Online scams are on the rise more now than ever as technology continues to advance.

In July, a woman was left baffled after she unknowingly ordered a slice of cake from a Chuck E Cheese on UberEats.

She revealed she fell for a ghost kitchen scam after allegedly ordering confetti cake from what she thought was a local place that specialized in baked goods.

Ghost kitchens are commercial kitchens used for food delivery services, but the customer and other TikTok users claimed they were 'scammed' after they ordered food from small businesses that turned out to be large restaurant chains.

And 45 – the current age of British actors James McAvoy and Sam Riley, and singers Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Corinne Bailey Rae – emerged as the golden number, according to those quizzed.

As many as six in ten (57 per cent) of 40 to 59-year-olds insisted that the notion of midlife as being a negative is outdated.

Those surveyed said signs of a midlife renaissance include joining a gym (24 per cent), learning a language (14 per cent), starting to meditate (13 per cent) and travelling (10 per cent).

Other ways to feel your best at 40-plus include doing yoga (13 per cent), taking up hiking (12 per cent), volunteering for charity (11 per cent) and moving to a foreign country (6 per cent).

Children aged two among thousands of overweight Scottish youngsters referred for specialist help on the NHS     (www.dailymail.co.uk)

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14352761/Children-aged-two-thousands-overweight-Scottish-youngsters-referred-specialist-help-NHS.html

Thousands of overweight children in Scotland, including tots as young as two, have been referred for specialist help.

Since 2020/21, more than 4,000 youngsters, some still nursery age, have been referred by NHS Scotland health boards for weight management assistance.

The specialist services involve a host of experts, including dietitians, psychologists and health coaches who are all tasked with helping the overweight children and their parents make changes to their lifestyle.

The number of children needing interventions has led campaigners and politicians to accuse the Scottish Government of failing in its promise to fix the country’s obesity epidemic.

Tam Fry, chairman of the National Obesity Forum, said: ‘Scotland has failed to properly address the prevention of obesity.

‘We have spent years and years really doing nothing to ensure that children in their pre-school years get the kind of attention that will stop them becoming too fat too early.’

The Mail asked all of Scotland’s health boards to provide data on the number of children referred to a paediatric weight management programme.

The responses revealed that since 2020/21, at least 4,307 children have been sent for specialist help.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran said it refers some children as young as two to a healthy weight management programme.

Meanwhile, NHS Lothian said that while they accept referrals for all ages, children even under two could be referred for weight management help, following an initial check with a paediatric hospital specialist to rule out any related serious medical conditions.

Some health boards saw an increase in referral rates over the period covered.

The findings follow a recent report by advocacy organisation Obesity Action which found that the rates of overweight children across Scotland are ‘growing alarmingly’, with almost a fifth of children (18 per cent) at risk of obesity.

The report also revealed the devastating possible impacts of childhood obesity, such as poor mental health and low self-esteem, alongside an abundance of health risks both now and in later life.

These include high blood pressure and cholesterol, breathing and joint problems, alongside fatty liver disease.

Socioeconomic inequalities such as poverty are also considered to be a factor in childhood weight increase.

The Scottish Government has a target of halving childhood obesity by 2030.

In Scotland, almost 30 per cent of all children are overweight or obese (file image)

However, Mr Fry said ‘no target to beat obesity has been met in the last 30 years.

Instead, they need a proper strategy that helps families prevent their children from becoming fat in the first place.’

In Scotland, almost 30 per cent of all children are overweight or obese.

Scottish Conservative public health spokesman Brian Whittle said: ‘There is something very wrong with the health of our nation when children as young as two are in need of specialist weight management services.

‘These figures should be a stark warning to {Health Secretary}Neil Gray and the SNP government that more action is needed.’

Public Health Minister Jenni Minto said: ‘We support initiatives across the country to improve the health of our children and their families.

‘These include the Scottish Milk and Healthy Snack Scheme and maintaining support for convenience stores, predominantly in areas of higher deprivation, to make healthier food and drink more accessible. We also fund community food networks, supporting them to increase access to affordable, healthier food and to promote the health benefits of nutrition and physical activity.’

North Queensland is currently facing a flood 'disaster' as thousands of residents are urged to seek higher ground or evacuate their homes by midday.

Heavy rain continues to impact areas of the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and North Tropical Coast, extending from Mackay to south of Cairns.

Authorities have warned the incoming floods will be dangerous and 'life threatening' with thousands of Aussies warned to move to higher ground as soon as possible.

Cyclone-like rain totals have lashed Townsville and surrounds with forecasts of 200mm to 400mm expected through Sunday into Monday.

Residents have reported seeing rainwater seeping through their floorboards with fears the rain could reach to the second storey of buildings.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Dean Narramore said the weekend rainfall could lead to flooded homes, businesses and properties, landslides and further road closures.

'We're likely to see widespread falls of anywhere from 200 to 400 millimetres almost on a daily basis, with isolated falls in excess of 900 millimetres possible,' he said.

'We could even be talking about places in excess of one metre over the next few days. That is an incredible amount of rainfall.'

Queensland Police stated the person was found dead in flood water around Ingham about 9.20am.

It's understood SES personnel were transporting members of the public when their boat hit a tree and flipped, tipping six people into the water.

Five people were rescued and an off-duty police officer found the body of the missing person a short time later.

It was later revealed the deceased was a woman and not part of the SES crew.

Floods 'much, much worse' than 2009 disaster

An Ingham resident of nearly 40 years said flooding is the worst she's ever seen.

Patricia Murphy was forced to flee her home on Saturday night as the Herbert River continued to rise.

Premier David Crisafulli earlier said the river had reached 14.8 metres, close to the recorded 15.2 metre flood in 1967.

Ms Murphy recorded 750mm of flooding at her house in the 2009 floods, the most severe flood event in recent history, but said this weekend's falls would lead to 'much, much worse' damage.

'Whatever we packed up and put on frames yesterday, it's probably floating now,' she told the ABC.

'I'm not looking forward to going home because it's going to be a big job to clean up.'

'If you are in that area we're asking you to leave by midday and the preparation's all been done yesterday.

'Separately to that, if you're in a low-lying area and you believe that you're a risk to flooding, you should also do that.

'Our advice is you can go with family and friends, but if that's not an option there are evacuation centres that are open at both Heatley as well as at the Townsville Sports Reserve.'

Residents warned to evacuate now

Authorities have given thousands of north Queenslanders an urgent evacuation order as flood water continues to rise.

Premier David Crisafulli emphasised the severity and urgency of the situation, warning residents not to be complacent.

He said the Herbert River has already reached 14.8 metres, close to the recorded 15.2 metre flood in 1967.

'Some of the falls we saw overnight in different parts were, quite frankly, at incredible levels,' he told ABC24 on Sunday.

'If people are in a situation where they believe that is a prospect, don't take the risk. Please leave and I just can't be more clear about that.'

He said swift water rescue crews, including Water Police, SES and defence personnel, had been deployed in and around flood zones and urged anyone who felt they were in danger to call triple zero.

An Aussie bloke has sidelined his kebab while out on the town to heroically confront a trio of would-be thieves allegedly stealing from a bottleshop.

Brisbane man Brad stepped in after seeing three teenagers allegedly robbing West End Liquorland in front of bemused customers at about 7pm on Saturday.

CCTV footage from the store shows the would-be robbers grabbing bottles of liquor from the shelves and stashing them inside their backpacks.

The lone attendant at the counter was distracted during the Saturday evening rush and completely outnumbered by the group.

But eagled-eyed Brad saw what was happening from the street where he was queuing for a kebab and rushed to the store.

'I went and I just stood in front because it's a single door,' Brad told 9News.

He told the teens to surrender the bottles while barricading the door.

Their only way out, he said, would be empty-handed or with a receipt for the booze.

'They tried to argue. They came out and tried to push me. I grabbed them, and threw them aside,' Brad continued.

'The way I was raised, from my parents in Sydney, we don't put up with that stuff.'

Brad is seen in the footage snatching bottles of Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff from the thieves' hands and placing them on the ground.

The trio finally have up and fled to a white SUV stationed across the road.

We're selling our wonderful £21 million family castle after 700 years and 28 generations - and you'll never guess what our five children think of our decision...     (www.dailymail.co.uk)

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14349453/What-did-children-say-heard-selling-family-castle-700-years-28-generations-21-million.html

Many can identify with the immense relief that accompanies downsizing later in life.

After years of slogging at the coal face and raising children, an empty nest can mean the chance to move to a smaller place with lower bills and experience the heady rush of freedom.

Sir Thomas Ingilby certainly knows the feeling: he recalls the moment of handing over the keys to his Yorkshire home as akin to 'a giant weight being lifted off my shoulders'.

'It was extraordinary,' the 69-year-old muses. 'I've never felt anything like it. It really was like a physical sensation.'

Then again, the weight in question was an unusually hefty one, given it came in the form of Ripley Castle, a vast and ancient estate that has been in Sir Thomas's family for 700 years and 28 generations and which he inherited at the tender age of 18.

That weight was not just the upkeep of the castle itself but preservation of a family legacy that dates back to the mid-1300s. From Catholic martyrs and Gunpowder Plotters to the redoubtable 'Trooper Jane', a female Ingilby ancestor who held Oliver Cromwell at gunpoint overnight in the castle library during the Civil War, the wealth of history here is immense.

Yet this year, if all goes to plan, a non-Ingilby (with £21million to spare) will take residence within these ancient walls for the first time.

'It's been half a century of responsibility and now we are ready for an irresponsible retirement' says the affable Sir Thomas.

Sir Thomas and Lady Emma Ingilby are selling their family home Ripley Castle, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire, which has been in the family for more than 700 years

The family legacy dates back to the mid-1300s, and includes characters such as Catholic martyrs and Gunpowder Plotters

'It's been great fun living here, but it comes with huge challenges, and that's one of the reasons we're selling, because we had a list of things to do to preserve it and we've done it. We are leaving it in amazing condition.'

'It's been a wonderful family home,' adds Emma, 65, his rather glamorous wife of 40 years. 'But it's time for another family to enjoy it.'

The Ingilbys actually moved out two years ago – downsizing for them meant a five-bedroom Georgian house nearby – in order to allow their eldest son, software engineer Jamie, 39, some time to enjoy what would have been his birthright.

Along with his wife and two young daughters, Jamie, the current key holder, is ensconced in the castle's 11-bedroom private apartment until a sale is completed.

It will, Sir Thomas admits, be a 'bittersweet' moment for Jamie and his four siblings – cabinet maker Joslan, 38, Eleanor, 36, who works in finance, tax adviser Jack, 35, and 30-year-old Richard, who works in marketing in Vancouver.

Nonetheless, he insists they are also relieved to be relinquished from the burden of maintaining a Grade 1 listed castle and its 445 acres of parkland.

'Obviously, growing up, they saw the responsibility we had,' says Sir Thomas. 'We had a meeting before the decision was signed and sealed and they actually told us, 'Thank you', because they'd watched us over the years, and we'd released them as well as ourselves.'

It has been a long time coming.

The family line here dates back to the 1300s, when Sir Thomas's forebear, also a Thomas, married Edeline Thwenge and acquired the castle as part of her dowry.

The second in line – yes, another Thomas – was knighted when a wild boar charged at Edward III in 1357 while he was hunting and he intervened, saving the king's life. 'He was also granted use of a boar's head as the family crest,' says the current Sir Thomas.

Ever since, the Ingilby history has been intertwined with the ruling royals, for better or worse.

Take Francis Ingilby, a devout Roman Catholic who became the focus of a manhunt after being ordained as a Catholic priest in France during the reign of the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I.

The Tower Room boasts an intricate plaster ceiling and wood panelling

The Knight's Room houses artefacts from the castle's rich history, such as armour and weapons

'He was captured just outside York in 1586, and after a short trial was hanged, drawn and quartered on what is now York racecourse. He was just 36,' Sir Thomas says.

Just under 400 years later, in 1979, Francis was beatified by John Paul at the Vatican. 'So we nearly have a saint in the family,' says Sir Thomas. Full sainthood requires two miracles, not one.

Twenty-one years later, William Ingilby – who only two years earlier had entertained a visiting James VI of Scotland en route to England to be crowned James I – was involved in the Gunpowder Plot against his former guest.

'He allowed the plotters to stay at Ripley Castle while they gathered horses, but while he was later charged with treason he managed to wriggle his way out it. I think he probably bribed the witnesses, as they changed their story halfway through the trial,' says Sir Thomas.

During the Civil War, the Ingilbys were on the side of King Charles against Oliver Cromwell. When the royalists lost the battle of nearby Marston Moor, the then baronet William Ingleby escaped the battlefield and returned to

Ripley Castle, hiding in a priesthole while his sister Jane, nicknamed Trooper Jane for her derring-do, held Oliver Cromwell at gunpoint by the library fireplace overnight to prevent him searching for her brother.

'Isn't that wonderful?' says Sir Thomas. 'We specialise in strong women in this family. Emma wouldn't have let him go either.'

'Certainly not,' adds his wife.

Of course, no decent castle is complete without a ghost, and over the years a female figure dressed in 19th-century clothing has been seen, believed to be the spirit of Sir Thomas's great-great-great grandmother Alicia, who died from heartbreak after losing her two children to meningitis.

'Emma has felt her presence and a couple of people have seen her at the top of the staircase heading towards what would have been the children's bedrooms. She's very friendly,' Sir Thomas says.

Family portraits adorn the walls of the main staircase spotlighted by stained glass arched windows

The wood-panelled Library, centred around a stone fireplace, looks on to the parkland

Today, a portrait of Lady Alicia adorns the grand stairs, while those of her two young children Mary and Henry are in the drawing room. 'We are hoping we can rent them to any buyers, as we would like to keep her here if possible,' says Sir Thomas.

To this rich history, of course, must now be added the decades under his tenure, which started in 1974 following the sudden death of his father Joslan at the age of 66.

Sir Thomas was just six weeks into Army training when he got the call that he was the new heir.

At first, his relative youth was a strength. 'You feel immortal and you're not really aware of the genuine responsibility,' he says. 'It probably hit me about four years later, the enormity of it. And of course there's no training for it. You just have to get on with it.'

By then he had met Emma, the daughter of a former nurse and Army officer.

She once joked that she captured her husband's attention with her party trick of being able to crack two walnuts in the front of her dungarees without using her hands, but had no idea who the charming boy she had been introduced to as plain old 'Tom' was until she visited the family seat a few weeks later.

The couple married in 1984 and took residence in a castle that needed a great deal of TLC (Emma recalls steel girders having to be put in their bedroom as the floor was so unsafe).

'Two generations really had done very little, so we just took a room at a time,' she recalls. 'And it was a bit frightening, because the scales are just so big. Any mistake you make in a big room is a big mistake. If you get it wrong, it is very expensive.'

Early on, the couple realised they would need to be more outward-looking, opening the castle daily rather than Sundays only. Weddings and corporate banquets swiftly followed. 'We were washing up by hand after dinners for 500 people – every fork, knife spoon and plate. We were up till 5am on many occasions.'

Lady Emma claims her biggest allies are a stapler and a glue gun, and has climbed ladders while heavily pregnant armed with both, repairing everything from chandeliers to ceiling plaster.

'Everyone else does health and safety, but I just get on with it,' she says airily. 'Because you've got to remember that even though it's been open to the public, it's still our home, and would you let someone in your home if it's not looking great? Of course not.'

Sir Thomas remembers his wife serving lunch to a shooting party hours after giving birth to Joslan.

'She greeted the guests on arrival while having contractions, then when we came back in for lunch, she was serving out the food. I said: 'Hang on, there's something different about you.'

'And she said, 'Yes, I've just had the baby.'

The couple continued to diversify into retail and office space, as well as renovating the stables and carriage room into a full-time wedding and function suite.

There have been all kinds of antics along the way: Lady Emma recalls how letting a bath overrun one day resulted in the demise of a stunning Venetian chandelier on the floor below.

'The whole carpet was strewn with bits of glass. I had to go to Sir Thomas and say: 'Oops, I might have just broken a chandelier,' she laughs.

'We had a dinner booked in and had to find an emergency chandelier as we didn't think paying guests would take kindly to a single electric bulb.'

Their events, too, have provided a wealth of stories.

Sir Thomas recalls a recent Sikh wedding during which a grand white stallion carrying the bridegroom (it's traditional for the groom to arrive on a horse) scented a mare in season and bolted for the fields – his charge clinging on for dear life.

'The horse was eventually stopped by a quick-thinking rambler grabbing its reins,' Sir Thomas recalls.

Another time, a well-refreshed guest dived into the lake in search of the mermaid he had been persuaded was resident there by a member of staff, losing his Rolex watch in the process. 'I would have loved to see what he put on his insurance claim,' says Sir Thomas.

It was during Covid that the couple had their Eureka moment – for the first time in years they had had their home to themselves.

'Of course, there are evenings when we do sit down and it gets to you, because you put so much of your heart into focusing on the finish line,' Sir Thomas says. 'But we have still got some time, and our health and we want to go and do some of the things we want to do'.

That includes travelling and writing, including a history of those extraordinary ancestors.

The big question, of course, is who will buy the Ingilbys' extraordinary home?

The estate, which also includes a hotel, a village store as well as multiple acres of land, is available as a whole or in lots.

'It's only been on the market for a week, but there are several viewings booked in, which is nice,' says Sir Thomas. 'We have no idea who they are though.'

In any case, their attention is currently occupied by having two weddings to plan, that of their youngest son Richard and daughter Eleanor, both of whom are marrying in May.

'It feels rather lovely, as the family history here started with a marriage and now it will end with one,' says Sir Thomas.

A pair of commuters have been caught in an alleged sex act on a Sydney train.

The couple took advantage of a slight delay in their journey to take part in the X-rated activity, unaware they were being filmed by another passenger.

The shocked commuter uploaded the footage to Reddit on Saturday with the caption: 'Sydney train special'.

Aussies were quick to share their thoughts on the lewd act, with some speculating the pair were headed towards the CBD at the time.

'Do you reckon they tapped on?' one asked.

'Some people are real go getters,' said another. 'I'm still lying in bed and these people are out and about on their Saturday morning, embracing the day'.

'I'm guessing their Friday night hasn't ended,' another replied.

'They getting off at Rooty Hill?' said a fourth.
