Democracy fails because over time the population grows comfortable and complacent, giving rise to demagoguery. Power doesnt corrupt, corruption is both drawn to power and best suited to get it. Power is attractive to sociopaths, what's more, sociopathic thinking is the most optimal for seizing, keeping, and expanding power. Rather than fighting each other, sociopaths can and do work together, when thethey see a system, they will conspire to identify what positions they need their allies to fill in order to further take over. They will not have regards for rules, laws, or even morals, instead they will only care about their options and the likely consequences of their actions, ask "what is stopping me from doing what I want to do?" And then "how can I make it so that this thing that is stopping me will no longer do so?" If they want to commit a crime, they just need to ensure that anyone who would punish them for the crime is someone who isn't going to, another sociopath, who will look out for their fellow conspirator in exchange for the same kind of favors. This is how any form of democracy will ultimately fail. Machiavelli was known for writing the prince, a guidebook for tyrants, but he was also known as a proponent of democratic republics, leading many to assume that the prince was written as satire, but I offer an alternative explanation, thst machiavelli knew that a democratic republic would become the most stable form of tyrannical oppression in history.
