Yea, my Father was the eldest (or third eldest, can't remember) of 11 children born in the 1930-40's. His Father was one of something like 14 or 17 and His Mother had like 9 or 11 siblings. It was normal, more so when self-sufficiency, animal husbandry, crop farming etc was paramount and infant mortality rates were substantially higher. No gibs -work or starve - simple really. I'm one of four, lol.
