It seems like a lot of effort to eclipse the sun but then fake it just to hide incoming ships or whatever.

Yes sir, it does seem like a lot of effort. I wager it costs a LOT of money too. Something like the combined budgets of the worlds space programs, and maybe more for padding.

The easier approach would be to come in from dark space and kill any reflective surfaces or lights. Several asteroids have snuck up on us this way.

That's the Idea. With a big bright fake sun in the sky, they are hoping to overcome the brightness of the inbound objects.

Especially with the technology to either obscure or redirect that light toward their sun-simulator. And that re-directed light is why you see these images in reflections of the "sun light", everyone ends up saying they're 'lens flares'. It's an artifact of how the technology works to redirect that light. It's basically like an overhead projector. Like she says in most of her videos, "We only see what they miss."
