Doesn't sound a million miles off the ancient north-eurasian religion, or at least what we know of it. Mostly ancestor worship combined with stories about (but not usually direct worship of) nature spirits.

You could probably come up with a few codified myths to explain your evolutionary views to kids. That's the kernel of a religion right there.

Not sure if the island thing impaced the japanese as much: Even up until european contact Hokkaido was still a frontier, so they hadn't reached the limits of their expansion any more than if they were a peninsula.

What's puzzling me is how different their outcomes are from the greeks. The greeks were also a very warlike bunch invading an archipeligo with lots of mountain valleys and small islands, but instead of becoming extremely insular OCD high-trust types they became very extroverted traders and colonists. Maybe the climate was important too? Like Japan was so fertile and productive they had no reason to be interested in trade as much?
