If you haven't seen mental illness firsthand nothing will make sense. They hop these kids up on psyche meds, depending on what they are given, they will then exist on a different plane of reality. They could tell them that they are living in a simulation and all the kids they kill in this world will be their slaves in the real life when they "wake up". The shooters are looking for something exciting to get them out of this altered/movie life they are living in.
