It wasn't abuse, it was discipline. I was an unruly little shit, and I needed to learn to honor my elders. Even if I knew they were wrong. There's a fine line to that approach, and it was walked. Physical discipline was my mother's job. She was the kid raiser. What I left out of that little story is that in 43 years I never once saw my parents raise so much as their voice to each other, I never saw them drink alcohol. I'm a lucky fucker. I'm a man today because she was totally fucking wrong a few times but mostly right.
