Because until now, no one could guess the eventual long-term effects of failure to achieve the goal. Now we know better. It's not enough to banish them, or prune them. Tolerance and understanding are only seen as weakness where they are concerned. History has shown us that utter ruthlessness is the only answer. They must be pursued to the ends of the earth and eradicated, root and branch, or like weeds, they will always come back.
