High transmissibility does not necessarily equal increased lethality. The only thing that will do is cause the same amount of deaths as the original, non-engineered virus, just in a narrower window of time, giving the impression of greater lethality.
In fact, the way the media and governments pushed that false equivalence suggests the virus was designed specifically for that purpose as part of a coordinated effort: to have as high an r0 as possible while being no more deadly than the common cold (from which it was derived) so it could be used as a propaganda tool to trick the public into thinking there was an actual threat (there is, but it's not the virus) and thereby relinquish their rights and allow actions by governments/paragovernments they otherwise would balk at.
