Was WW1 just a cover while the bolsheviks took Russia?

submitted by drhitler to whatever 2.2 yearsFeb 23, 2023 06:32:47 ago (+28/-0)     (whatever)

The Revolution really ramped up around 1914 and ww1 went for 1914-1918, by 1917 the bolsheviks had seized power.

Seems like the perfect time to hijack a country while the military is busy abroad, i almost have to wonder if the communists orchestrated the start of ww1 too.

I'm quite interested in this topic. I've done a considerable amount of research into WW1 and I'm not quite clear on some things. I'm not trolling or pozzing or kvetching or whatever the terms are. I'm just genuinely interested in this subject.

1905 was the start of the first major revolution and set the stage for the later bigger revolution. There was smoldering resentment among the lower class but from what I understand nothing really happened until February 1917. There were grumblings, there was hatred of the royal family but none of the truly consequential riots did not happen until late 1916/early 1917. Lenin had fled Russia in 1907 after robbing post offices with other future Bolsheviks like Stalin. The group moved around a bit and stirred up trouble but all this was done in diaspora. Lenin was living in Switzerland in 1917. The Germans allowed him passage into Russia via a sealed train car, but the February Revolution had already happened in 1917 before Lenin was even in the country. Karensky and the provisional government ruled all of 1917 until November when the Bolsheviks took over. Now I get it that Jews are bad but I disagree that the revolution was ramped up in 1914. The Bolsheviks weren't even the ones to initiate the first toppling of the tsarist regime. They just took advantage once Karensky had power.

Now it is my belief that Russia is to blame for the outbreak of WW1. They were the first power to mobilize on July 30, 1914. Up until that point the issue was contained to the Austro-Hungarians and their grievance with Serbia. There were still back channel diplomacy going on between France, Russia and Germany on July 23 when Austria issued its ultimatum to Serbia. Austria declared war on Serbia on July 28th. Russia had no formal alliance with Serbia. There was zero obligation for Russia to get involved in the conflict other than its desire to expand to Istanbul and its view as the protector of Orthodoxy in the world. Russia demanded Austria to not attack which was ignored and Russia mobilized. That is what set everything off. If Russia had not made this decision its reasonable to predict the war would have a been a small regional conflict between Austria and Serbia.

Russia mobilizing put enormous pressure on Germany. First of all Germany did a formal alliance with Austria and was obligated to come to its defense. Second the Russia military was bigger than all of other great powers at the time. The problem was that the infrastructure and logistical capabilities were far behind everyone else. It would take Russia a long time to get its engines up and running but once it did it would ben an unstoppable steamroller, or at least that's what the military leaders of the time thought. No one had any idea how good or bad any of the armies would perform. Russia was one of the worst performing armies of WW1 but by pre-war predictions they were the powerhouse. The third issue for Germany was that it was surrounded on both sides by France and Russia who were both in an alliance. Germany had no room to maneuver and could not play a "wait and see" game. Germany had to act fast or else French would be in the Rhineland and Russians would be in East Prussia before they knew it. The simple act of Russia declaring mobilization put so much pressure on Germany that they had no choice other than to declare war on Russia and France and enact the Schlieffen Plan.

I don't see how Jews factor into this. Perhaps there was some Jewish ministers in the Tsar's advisory committee who had crystal balls and could see the future and were giving the tsar bad advice? I don't know. But as I said Russia's motivations were 1. Secure Istanbul and expand south to the Black Sea and 2. Protect all Orthodox Christians of Europe. Neither of those have anything to do with Jews. Look I could be wrong and if you have some information to share I would love to read up on it because this is one of my favorite historical topics to talk about.

I don't agree with another post here claiming Bethmann Holwig was responsible for the war. I laid out my arguments why the blame should be cast on Russia. But don't get me wrong. It wasn't just Austria or Russia who wanted the war. It was EVERYONE. Every single great power in Europe was itching to get into a conflict. Everyone had brand new military technology they wanted to try out and many parties like France had generational grudges that they wanted to get payback for. Very few people were trying to put the brakes on. But I am more than open to debate and would love to see some information backing up your points of view.
