I don't want to summarize Andrian Havill's book, but he makes the case that Woodward's inconsistencies and obvious untruths on how he signaled his contact tended to show it was all fake. Plus, an earlier draft of "All the President's Men" entirely omitted this all-important source, which makes no sense. It's almost as though he was invented to to juice up the story, especially since Woodward and Bernstein and the publisher knew a movie was going to be made based on the book.
