Ask your dad why he did it. I've already traced this copycat spelling phenomenon back to 1955. So I already know the answer. In 1940s people wrote lights. All the construction was knob and tube but everyone called them lights. One day, Miller lite came out and then electricians saw barenstain bears and didn't think twice and everyone around them didn't even notice. What I'm saying is new apprentices write lites and they don't even know it's being spelled wrong. It's like pointing out a dying smoke alarm. Suddenly they think the smoke alarm is supposed to beep. No it isn't. You spelled it wrong unconsciously and then when it was brought into conscious you looked for a reason. "My Dad did it" is actually the perfect explanation but assuming it "saves space" is just your guess but you don't actually know for a fact how or why it was started. Mexicans literally think that's how it's spelled. At least they're honest with themselves about it. White contractors are always bullshitting themselves. There's a G in F-r-i-d-g-e and just as long. That fact about contractors being bullshitters I think we can at least agree on.
