He only won in 1868 because of the black vote newly enfranchised, ex-Confederates being barred from voting, and several Southern states not being in the Union. 3/4 of the population lived outside the former Confederacy and he still lost the white vote - even with the aforementioned Confederate soldiers being disenfranchised and several Southern states not being readmitted.
