As far as I'm concerned a jointer is one of the essentials of serious woodworking, I wanted badly to get one but I also needed a lathe and I had no room for both in my shop, so I got the lathe and picked up new 3" blades for my Makita planer, the difference between that and a jointer is the same as amateur and professional...I've done plenty of woodworking, framing, finishing, furniture, truss & joist, I could rough in anything but I was never patient enough to give that professional look, a few projects turned out really good but I got lucky, I just ain't consistent with woodworking, but everything I've ever built is still sturdy as fuck, I'm good with log structures, log is actually easy but it's the handling and positioning that's hard, I've seen logs 30ft long and 800lbs, "ridge poles", fucking brutal to handle...and it was then that I knew fucking well that I need a jointer.
