Some of it's that. Some people want to "do over" their lives. Others just want the good health and freedom of youth. Still others just want the good things of the past back. And,of course,some things were just better in the past. I mean,who wouldn't want to be able to buy a house on a gas station attendant's wage? That's just objectively better.
But in the end,the good things about the past aren't as far away as they might seem. You can always put together a malt shop or dance club and see if people want it.
Other things are just relics of the past with no place in the here and now. Like how people get misty eyed about Blockbuster Video. The reason Blockbuster was awesome was because movies didn't suck as bad back then. A Blockbuster today would be full of the same shit they can watch on a streaming service for cheap. There's a reason it failed. And those reasons haven't gone away.
