"Medicine" back then was incredibly basic. While I'm not advocating for the medical industrial complex, general knowledge has become widespread and relatively easy to understand. People drank whiskey to help "dull the pain" before "surgery" or amputation. They also used the same bottle as antiseptic. Dying of infection was common and cleanliness wasn't anywhere close to as common as it is today, at least on a general level. I know people still do get sick while in a hospital.
