It use to be cheap enough that when you ran out of credit - just buy an entire new $5 sim card that came autoloaded with $5 talk and txt credit (back in the day when it was default 20c and minute / 20c a txt, but could only load on a minimum of $20 iirc.
NZ telecom had a monopoly on mobile phones in NZ late 90's early 2000's as the only provider - Govt commission stepped in because our charges and plans were one of the highest in the (Western) World, then a bunch of carriers began and prices/ plans dropped by over 60-80%
