That's bullshit, well it's mostly bullshit at least. They set up one of the first banking systems. They also weren't actually poor fellow knights, they were rich as fuck. It's also widely speculated that they were major contributers to the Papal archives, AND that they kept a lot of relics and fortune hidden from the church, which is why they got that burn notice on October 13. They morphed into Scottish Right free masons, but they never fully integrated into it.
