I lived on well water for 5 years up in the Blue ridge Mountains. e then used PUR filter to remove the gritty particles. Delicious water it was. But animals don't dig wells or use filtration, but they thrive even with foul water.
But perhaps that is only because few animals WANT or NEED to run long distance. I suspect that many animals could do better (horses for one) should the need arise. So, if the AVERAGE human slept on the ground, drank from a creek, and ate whatever he could forage in the natural world, I doubt that he's be up to running at all. Dysentery and vomiting and cramping, the average human living just like the animals would barely be able to crawl much less run.
