U238 and u235 fissiles differently u235 is a net neutron producer. U238 is not. Separating isotopes is much harder than refining ore. If you don't separate them, the u238 gets in the way and prevents a chain reaction. The u235 is the neutron source.

Can you describe how to separate uranium isotopes to sufficient purity?
