How come Germans voted to discontinue their nuclear plants back in 2011?      (AskUpgoat)

Came across an article stating that Germans overwhelmingly voted to discontinue their nuclear plants in April of 2011.

What gives, is this simply the fear of accidents?

Also, on a related note, anyone else notice that nuclear energy has all of a sudden become super popular among NPCs and common folk?

"Something something the technology is better now so it's totally safe".

I'm still undecided, they may be safer, but things can still go to shit in ways that safety analysts fail to predict. In this day and age, a nuclear plant would have to be designed to withstand war, riots and (((terrorists))), not just natural phenomenon.
