The Neil Gaiman allegations takes a strange twist as the comic industry and sci-fi publishing media works harder to cover up the story. Reddit has now banned discussion. i'm not even going to spoil anything that happens in it.

its written by douglas adams, aka the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy guy. dirk gentley's holistic detective agency is MORE INSANE then the hitchhiker books. i could literally tell you what the twist at the end of the book is revealed to be, and you would think i was on crack and lying to you.

im picking up the Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul as soon as i can to see where the hell this goes on to.

In Nimbin, NSW Touted as the Marijuana Capital of Australia, There Was a Stand of Second Hand Books Two of Which Were on My All Time Fav List - San Diego Lightfoot Sue by Tom Reamy & Kurt Vonnegut's The Sirens of Titan .. maybe it was the heady smell of MJ in the air but they sure "took me back."     (www.aussietowns.com.au)

San Diego Lightfoot Sue - The Sirens of Titan.

Lightfoot Sue was about a street kid who was in love with a Figueroa Street type babe and the good times they had until their stars drifted apart, it was Tom Reamy's only major work which took the world by storm when it first appeared in 1975, Titan was classic KV SF .. impossible to describe it should be on everyone's "must read" list.

Some of ya may have seen my post recently about same title as the post book from 1918. I finished it last night and will share with you what it was about.

It covered in brief the time period of the mid to late 1500s-1700s France and their work at colonizing New France or Canada.

At the time France was in it's Bourbon phase where nationalism and religion were primary focuses. The Monarchy held all major reigns of political power at that time. They were slow to move sending folks to the New World due to not realizing the wealth and resources to be extracted there. Meanwhile the English the Spanish and the Dutch were already there and working on establishing foot holds there.

Eventually the French King would start warming to the idea of discovery but was mostly focused on mineral deposits. So he began investing in well known seafarers to go do some investigations.

Mineral deposits were not found but furs from the local savages would do. For the first many years it was very rough on the French that went over. It was quite difficult to clear land covered in forests to sow crops, constant threat of the English and teepee niggers and winters with low rations and plenty of scurvy. Once you were there getting back home meant three weeks minimum with the wind in your favor. So the folks that stayed were some tough customers.

As time went by they worked out things with the feather niggers save the Iriquois who were allied with the English. They would trade trinkets (lol) and brandy with the savages for furs of beaver and other animals. Timber also became quite a profitable endeavor. Agriculture while sending some to France was largely consumed by the colonists of the time. They mainly lived in modern day Quebec and Montreal. Though they sent expeditions down into Iowa and Illinois. Some savages would go with and help provide something of protection and knowledge of the areas.

Many able bodied men were getting the call for the wild and become independent traders and venture into the wilderness with goods from France to trade for furs. This made it more difficult for the colonies agricultural and industrial growth. Farms kept something of a fuedal system where there was the main land owner and the farmers paid their dues. Land deeds were given out rather freely but the fur trade was too appealing to many.

The Jesuits became coming en masse and establish religious faith to the colonies as well as venturing out to the wilderness to attempt to convert the feather niggers. Their presence helped eas relations and helped the French establish forts and such along the rivers to dominate the fur trade. None of the other western powers commanded control of waterways like the French did.

As time went on the population kept growing and life became more or less stable for the colonists. The towns were safe, everyone had food, many festivals were had and trade was good. The French at the time were very much Catholic and all regardless of rank attended mass every Sunday.

France wanted the colonies to get away from the brandy, timber and fur trade and become more focused on agricultural exports back to France however none of those efforts resulted in much.

Education in the colonies was largely religious and many couldn't read or write so they needed notaries and the clergy to assist. That would eventually get better.

I have to say quite fascinating in all regards. Definitely shows the tenacity of Whites when they want something done in the middle of nowhere, no one is coming to help til next spring. Brutal winters and at times venture too far away and a red nigger would kill you for it.

They endured unfortunately as we all know what these modern places look like now it's a travesty of what blood, sweat and excruciating death Whites put up to make Canada and what it is today.

Quin’s Shanghai Circus, by Edward Whittemore - May well be the best espionage novel of the 20th Century, as good as anything Graham Greene, John Le Carre or Somerset Maugham have written. It's a deep, dark, and magical read that does what Kafka tells us books should do     (neglectedbooks.com)

Quin’s Shanghai Circus which contains a graphic description of the horrors of the Japanese assault on the Chinese city of Nanking, is without a doubt an impressive work of story telling, although the novel is set mostly in Japan and China, Whittemore’s approach more resembles the intricacies of the most ornate Islamic scripts.

In which one wonders how anyone could manage to unravel a text from the twists and coils and overlapping strokes. It’s not surprising that he shifted his setting to the Middle East after this book. Whittemore spent some years working in the Far East for the CIA, doing just what is never revealed. NeglectedBooks.

The Coming Race War in America A Wake-up Call By Carl T. Rowan (nigger) 1996     (www.washingtonpost.com)

"Chapter One: America's Violent Decline

How do you tell when a great civilization is in decline? When a great nation is on the rocks spiritually, morally, racially, and economically?

I look closely at my country, and everywhere I see signs of decadence, decay, and self-destruction.

Respect for law and order has declined drastically, except in the phony speeches of politicians.

The nation's capital is awash with special counsel and special prosecutors, taking testimony from the President, the First Lady, key members of the cabinet and the Congress--all accused or suspected of criminal wrongdoing. The FBI is far short of being trustworthy, its agents and former agents deep in partisan politics. Local police departments reek with corruption, including condoned lawlessness by some policemen. Our prisons bulge with record numbers of young Americans, mostly the fruit flies of the drug trade, while the big bumblebees of the crime and drug syndicates peddle their wares with impunity.

Every day our newscasts begin with stories of grisly murders, sexual assaults, grotesque abuses of children, mass killings on job sites, and worse.

America is sinking in greed. Our workers fear tomorrow and their bosses grab what they can today. A corporate fatcat can get a $10 million reward for "downsizing" his firm--that is, putting thousands of employees out of work.

Public morality has probably never been lower. Lawmakers writhe and wrangle over how to deal with television programming that spews out sexual rot and gratuitous violence morning, afternoon, and night--prime time sewers. Congress makes believe that a meaningless "rating system" and a V-chip will solve the problem.

Racism has not been as virulent throughout America since the Civil War, with short fuses burning on a thousand powder kegs. We have seen our greatest law enforcement agency, the FBI, sit for weeks in a stalemate with a small Montana cult, the Freemen, whose leaders preach that the descendants of northern Europeans are "God's chosen people," that Jews are "the children of Satan," and that African Americans and other people of color are by nature dumb and immoral.

We see the Freemen and other hate groups like the Aryan Nation, the skinheads, the Ku Klux Klan, and assorted militias piling up arms for what they say is a coming race war in America that will precede the return of Christ."

Мастер и Маргарита (The Master and Margarita) - Mikhail Bulgakov, written between 1928 and 1940.     (books)
submitted by we_kill_creativity to books 2.0 years ago (+5/-0)

I think most here would find this book particularly interesting at this time considering it's setting, themes, and ultimate message: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Master_and_Margarita

From wiki:

The Master and Margarita (Russian: Мастер и Маргарита) is a novel by Soviet writer Mikhail Bulgakov, written in the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1940 during Stalin's regime. A censored version, with several chapters cut by editors, was published in Moscow magazine in 1966–1967, after the writer's death, by his widow. The manuscript was not published as a book until 1967, in Paris. A samizdat version circulated that included parts cut out by official censors, and these were incorporated in a 1969 version published in Frankfurt. The novel has since been published in several languages and editions.

The story concerns a visit by the devil and his entourage to the officially atheistic Soviet Union. The devil, manifested as one Professor Woland, challenges the Soviet citizen's beliefs towards religion and condemns their behavior throughout the book. The Master and Margarita combines supernatural elements with satirical dark comedy and Christian philosophy, defying categorization within a single genre. Many critics consider it to be one of the best novels of the 20th century, as well as the foremost of Soviet satires.

Had the granddaughter this weekend, read her stories at night. Seems that there’s some weirdly described themes in some of these newer books.

One of those was this little number called Kitty Corn, about a kitten trying to be a unicorn. For reference:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itty-Bitty_Kitty-Corn

In it, this little cat made a paper horn and tried to present herself to her friends as a unicorn. Those two friends told her she would never be one. She just wasn’t a unicorn. Lo and behold a real unicorn showed up, and the little cat saw the differences between her and it. She realized she could never be a unicorn, no matter what she did. However in an odd twist, the unicorn told her that she always wanted to be a kitten, and with the kitten, wanting to be a unicorn, ergo, kitty – corn. it ends with the two of them laying together and their shadows blending so you couldn’t tell either one apart.

One of the lines repeated several times was: “I see you”. Not sure what that is, but seem to be important enough to say, over and over.

Checked out the author she’s not a jew, oddly enough. Has a couple other books that don’t seem to be along the same lines, but I haven’t looked into everything. I had to interrupt the story to tell the granddaughter that the kitten was just pretending. Because she clearly couldn’t be a real unicorn. No matter what she did she couldn’t be a real unicorn.

Needless to say, that book is now off the list of nighttime stories.

Is Herbert's stance on AI ('Butlerian Jihad') really ambiguous?     (books)
submitted by jerkofalltrades to books 4 months ago (+5/-0)
4 comments last comment...
According to this Brit and his sophisticated sarcasm Herbert ridiculed restrictions on AI by presenting the Butlerian Jihad as some retarded Bene Gesserit old wife's tale meant to scare peasants.

Now don't get me wrong. Walter generally knows what he's talking about and is largely just citing Herbert himself but reducing Dune to Beware of false prophets! or Do as you like! is retarded. He might have been vaguely anti authoritarian but he was clearly no starry eyed flower power believer either. Half the book is spent glorifying the fremen's culture of violence and rigid social boundaries. The most tech-friendly factions' plotlines (the Guild, Ixians) are thinly veiled allegories of losing one's humanity in the pursuit of power...

I just don't understand how after reading Dune you can come away with the notion 'well since Paul and his son were tragic rulers you can do away with rules'. Herbert probably didn't think there should be no restrictions on AI. And no, you can't just assume the Butlerian Jihad didn't happen just because it's only expanded upon in the later apocryphal novels. I think what Herbert intended to show with the series is how fragile humanity is and fucked we all would be without some morality (be it imposed by some übermensch or coming from within us).

But maybe he really was nothing but a trippy libby hippy and am just too retardedly conservative to understand his point.

Gimme shit I don't care. I'm reading Jurassic Park. I haven't finished but I'd like to see how it was all a setup and a mind fuck. Hammond ran a flea circus where he could convince people that there were fleas there. His "dinosaurs" are bastard biological engineering but the power of persuasion makes the people think they're seeing dinosaurs. Cooked up in a lab in plastic eggs. I feel it's a real testament to what's coming. Genetic manipulation.
