In the context of this post, nuclear is off the table though. Not even a viable theory in 1913 or before.
If nuclear is an option, just give everyone electric cars and problem solved without even having to go through the lossy conversion from nuclear to fuel.
The point is that things that seem promising in small batches, ie, cars running on biodiesel, do not always scale up for world wide use.
