I've never given a thought to finishing my collection of US states. My travels happened pretty naturally - just driving different directions to avoid copying my routes. We hit ND going one direction, SD going another.

But this idea of collecting States is not much different than my dad's Indy car collection or my friend's Lego collection or my brother's tattoo collection. These things aren't getting anybody anywhere. To some degree I understand junkies better than these collectors.

That was the vision. I saw a junkie making more sense than most of the people I know.

The most supposedly successful one of the bunch who everyone aspires to be, I heard she just put out an ad for a roommate. She doesn't have a boyfriend. How the hell did she end up single at the end of all this? I should have married this girl when she was 21 and impregnated her. It is tragic to see her covered in tattoos looking for a roommate at 35. This desperate trying for life is something im very glad to have avoided.

The travel nut said she does it to make up for the fact that her dead brother can't do it. I just want to know how's that working out? How do you know when you have fulfilled two entire lives?

The travel nuts have always been so tiresome.

I met most of them during my time as a server. A young person will spend all their discretionary income on traveling then proceed to talk about those experiences non-stop.

It was no easy life but around that era, had an old buddy save for over a year to go to Japan. I spent all my money on college hoping to get out of poverty. These days, he’s still pissing about with dead end jobs and broke as shit. But at least he went to Japan.

Travel is an option now. However, now that I’m no longer broke, i’ve returned to school for something much better. Never really known comfort or boredom so I can’t stop now. But for me, I was always a transient, living on couches and traveling across towns. So instead of the usual “I want to travel the world “ trope, I just wanted a place to settle and grow roots. My fantasies were about having land and homesteading.

Even while on my honeymoon, I had a chance to hear some of the other tourists talk non-stop about all the other countries they visited. I looked at my wife and said: “Let’s just enjoy this moment.”

It’s always women too.

Ideally, if I travel somewhere, it’s because I have business there or am establishing relationships. There is a dopamine drip where I am working toward a goal. Not just traveling in a fit of pointless leisure.
