It was proven in the oak ridge nuclear uranium refining workers that every bit of radiation dose that you receive increases your risk of cancer proportionately to the amount you get. There is no safe level.

The oak ridge workers working on refining uranium for the atomic bomb wore patches which precisely indicated how much radiation they got every day they worked. Follow-ups were done years later with them as they got older to determine their rates of cancer and the study showed conclusively that those who got more radiation got more cancer and there was no level of radiation that was safe. If you had less radiation you got less cancer but you still got cancer proportionally to the radiation that you got.

Additionally I had read some time ago that one of the primary causes of the type of brain cancer that senator John McCain died of and that Jimmy Carter died of was childhood dental X-rays which exposed your brain case to a lot of radiation. When people say oh it's no more harmful than a dental x-ray know that that dental x-ray may cause you brain tumors in your 60s 70s and '80s.

what's the answer? Don't get x-rays unless you absolutely have to. Never get them commonly. Never get them as a routine exam.

In most other countries they use MRI imaging which provides Superior imaging and does not subject your tissues to ionizing radiation like x-rays. But in America the MRI machines have been locked down in such a way that they're much more expensive to operate and so we default to x-rays. In Japan the MRI machines have been designed in a way that they could be made very inexpensively so they default to MRIs which have no known damaging effects to tissues but do not let the doctor inject you with contrast agent because the contrast agent that us doctors want to inject you with before they give you an MRI can have terrible consequences. So of course the US doctors have figured out a way to make something that's very safe be very harmful.
