Lincoln's election was the proximate cause of South Carolina setting the dominoes falling by seceding from the union. There were lots of warnings of civil war for years. Warnings of civil war if John C. Frémont were elected in 1856. But people actually calling for it? Not so much.Americans had mostly the same basic values in 1860, were largely of the same race. Now we can't even agree whether a man should use a woman's restroom.
