I suppose it would depend on whether we are referring to lacto-ovo-vegetarians or just vegans.

average body mass index (BMI) in omnivores, semi-vegetarians, lacto-ovo vegetarians, and vegans was 28.3, 27.3, 26.1, and 24.1 kg/m2, respectively
~7th day adventist study (americans)

Average BMI france 25.3
Average BMI US 28.8

There are other studies that show amount of meat consumed is highly correlated to BMI. So there are multiple factors but it appears that meat consumption is positively correlated to BMI. Some of that is bound to be muscle increase. But overall, BMI is negatively correlated to longevity regardless of body composition. FYI, more meat is not better.
