They are. They can be interchangeable. For better or worse the world has synonyms. Ive got an old dictionary here that says gender is the state of being male or female. The sex, male or female is another definition ive seen that makes more sense and matches what everyone was once taught. People still remember that so of course in recent years some have been trying to forcibly redefine what male and female is too along with sex itself. Not even the definition of penis is being spared because it is classified as male genitalia.

Depending on what you consult some would say gender encompasses every sex and that gender would be the type of sex a thing is.

Gender more or less tells you what it is right in the word with its suffix and prefix.

Masculine and feminine are the traits associated with the two common genders. Not to be confused with gender itself.

In an odd way I like this video. Whoever wrote it knew they were lying. It starts with someone telling grandpa they and everyone they ever knew were magically wrong their entire lives and the modern era has the "right" answer that was previously unknown throughout all history.
