Yeah, those ladies were "computers". They were given a series of equations and numbers to crunch, and their job was to key them in correctly, not invent the math.
They were "double-checkers" or extenders of the engineers initial math. For example, an engineer does an equation that requires Pi. They just mark it as 6.789397Pi. These women would then take that and do the actual calculation of 6.7893973.14159 and get a number.
When this movie came out I was living in one of the niggeriest places in the country and I still couldn't believe that everyone thought it really happened.
