Done. Done. Done. BTW, if you are looking for free ones, this is what occured to me. I went to buy some Baofeng F8/hp (8 watts) and the Chinese seller had taken the lower power 5RA (5 watts) and slapped a F8 label on them. https://baofengradio.ca/blogs/news/how-to-identify-fake-baofeng-products-and-accessories-1-bf-f8hp

They were on sale for $34 bucks ea so I bought 3 as that was about $30 each less than regular price for an F8. I was perusing for instructions and hacks (how to use info) when I learn that they are widely counterfeited. Shit. I figure I'm fucked. When they arrived I checked and saw I'd been cheated. Pissed off, I told the seller "refund my money and provide shipping instructions back to you". After a couple go rounds of this, they finally said (not joking either) "Hit with hammer, send picture of destroyed and we refund your money"

"Nope, piss up a rope, I will NOT destroy them - I'll send them back to you, advise shipping method and you pay". When they didn't give in, I notified Ebay, send copies of all the documentation including where they acknowledged that they were not an F8 (but they were a real Baofeng 5ra) and I got fully refunded. The 5RA were $20 at the time.

Put 2 in Faraday cages and have one out for use at work. It received FM so I'll put it on talk radio occasionally to listen in. Got my ham ticket (license) to transmit, and have talked with people at the far corners of the country while at work. Just set it on "scan" and it will pick up conversations. These can't be tracked if you are only listening, and are legal to listen without a license. (if you transmit, you'll be busted quickly so either get a ticket or wait until the SHTF to transmit)

I enjoyed the learning part of getting my ticket so much I then got my general then amateur extra and am learning electronics now. I figure that the odds of an EMP or CME are larger than most expect, and have prepared for that quite extensively by stockpiling shielded equipment that would be needed in such an event. My son in the next state over bought into my vision and his low tech prep version is to homestead. Raise rabbits and chickens, fishes, hunts with a bow etc.

The problem with those is range, especially since the range is line-of-sight.

Repeaters are already run by / monitored by the pigs. In a SHTF, repeaters will go down.

My cousin who was in the military said one of the tricks they used was to use devices that picked up cell phone signals when they flew over an area to find insurgents. And tracking radio signals is even older tech. Code names won't help as long as they can listen in. Use code phrases when talking over the radio so they think it's just people staying in touch.
