I had to look it up. Wow, that looks kind of cool, actually.
I still have my old garmin 'gpsmap' handheld because it was the best they made at the time when I bought it... and my previous one went for a swim and lives with spongebob now.

That's probably what mine is; it sounds similarly robust. I used to use it lots on the last boat, but that was while I was also trying to learn to navigate using entirely old-fashioned means in case of power loss or other technical difficulties.

Well, since then, we pretty much got less adventurous and sail to the same basic places all the time, and I don't need to use the GPS all that much anymore... but if and when I do, I have lots of good options. Also I bought a new chart book.

What navigation techniques were you learning?

I keep threatening to learn to use a sextant

Sextant for noon sights, but mainly dead reckoning using known points of reference which I turned out to be way better at than anyone including myself expected. I figured I'd estimate our hull speed at 5kts with 20kts of breeze, since that was about as fast as that little boat could go under sail without cheating by surfing a wave or something [which is kind of dangerous, but super fun!], and taking sights at intervals I decided that in about 20 minutes a yellow channel buoy should come into view off the port bow. I kinda figured I'd be sort of off and might miss the buoy altogether, but there it was, right on schedule! Good charts help with this, since stuff moves over time and stuff.

I have to rely on tables for the sextant sights because I never managed to figure out the spherical trigonometry to come up with the numbers myself, and I still need to do that. I also need to sand and varnish a whole bunch. And also paint. And some other stuff... but I think I'll have beers on that boat instead. Because why the fuck not.

Man that's awesome. You've earned some beer time.

It would be nice if they made one that floats. Or at least one that sinks way more slowly.

Honestly you should learn to navigate with a map and compass. You should never go into the woods without a topography map of the area and a good compass. GPS are for pussies.

Is that like a SatNav device?

Not a cunt but here's my take and I'm out playing in deep woods/no cell phone coverage areas a lot. NO. Garmin makes good stuff. My wife gave me the Garmin Fenix 5 GPS watch few years back. Too hard to read.

Most importantly, my Anderoid cell phone has GPS so I simply added the $20 or whatever, Gaia GPS app. The thing is fantastic, better than any Garmin. I can see topos and switch over to Google satellite pics of my location. I regifted the Garmin Watch to my son.
