Except there's no Covid to begin with, so when people take vitamin and mineral supplements, which will build up their immune system they will naturally recover faster from whatever influenza or common cold they have, which will be misdiagnosed as "Covid-19" due to the faulty test kits that are being used.
More like, people who are deficient have a disposition to infection. Maybe like blacks who are evolved for the plains of Africa living in cloudy Minnesota
We've known for over a decade that vitamin D is the most important nutrient to fighting respiratory virus infections. The fact that people were told to shelter in place, not go to outdoor events/gatherings, cover up with masks and gloves, and generally reduce their sunlight intake during a viral pandemic should have been the first clue that we were being lied to.
Older people and fatter people might want to take more. Fatties really want to take more. And elderly just cant absorb D or manufacture it well.
Check out this chart that shows intake vs serum level range. I think theres definitely some people that could benefit from higher D intake like 5000 IU/ day.
Downsides would be hypercalcemia in really high doses.I would think this was more likely in younger people.
Another potential risk that one study looked at — increased risk of some autoimmune diseases like MS. Probably not a huge increased risk but it probably strengthens immune reactions including self immunity. Trade offs. Nothings perfect.
I will do 10,000 IU a day to load up for a week or two, no problem. If you are white-white and live in a place with a decent winter, I don't see any problem with that level. I will usually do 5,000 IU as a minimum maintenance level. In the summer when I am getting a good spot of sun, I may cut back to 5,000 IU once every 2-3 days. But come autumn, I'll usually do a week or so at 10k daily, and then drop it back to 5k.
I used to be a big fan of supplementation generally. Now I am fairly limited in terms of what I think is worthwhile.
I do Zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Iodine. Sometimes I supplement Magnesium before sleep, or use Epsom salts in bathwater.
Vitamin D3 really requires Vitamin A as a cofactor, but instead of supplementing the latter, I eat liver once per week from locally raised animals I know are healthy. I have a farmer friend who is usually prepared to give liver away. People really should be getting animal-sourced Vitamin A.

1000 to 5000 is a normal range for daily supplementation.
