It's very simple: They fear that there will be unrest or even riots if they sentence the black guy. So they aim at the path of least resistance.

This is a good lesson on how political pressure from the street works. All what the Whites have to do now is to go tribal every time that a White is killed or sentenced.

And don't even try to be too specific on the justification. If a White person "was a good boy", this should be enough justification.
