It's a bit of a pain in the ass, but there is a workaround: keep the homepage you logged in with open in a spare tab and refresh it every so often or before you open any new tabs after the timeout has occurred (I haven't bothered to suss out what the exact timeout is, but I suspect it's somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes.)
It works for me in Opera; hope it does the same for you.
