That's the only good thing about cheap beer: It's cheap. But for a broke ass college kid, it's glorious. I can't tell you how much Lucky Lager I drank forty years ago. I loved those little 11 ounce bottles with a rebus printed under the cap. It wasn't good, but it got the job done.
I have not seen that crap in ages! I'd buy it if I did, and once it stopped being cold I'd kind of regret it...
The boat fridge just kind of keeps beers from getting warmer as fast as they otherwise would, but I need a bunch of ice in there to really keep cheap beers tolerable. So I've been mainly drinking expensiver beer and cheap booze instead. Whatever works, I guess.
I could swear there have been a few cheap brands that were kind of okay. Coors kind of comes to mind; it's on sale from time to time and is actually a pretty decent pils in my ever so very humble opinion.
Crap is right, but the price made it right. And I swear, "regret" must have been one of the ingredients, because you felt it coming up on you the next day.
The same time I was drinking Lucky Lager, I had my first and only 12 pack (shared with a friend) of Hamm's. I don't know why, it was probably more due to the circumstances than the beer itself, but I remember it being not half bad for a cheap beer, much better than Budweiser, which back then held the largest market share, with Coors behind it. I've never enjoyed Bud, Coors, PBR, or most of the others, but when I living on the East coast, I really liked Stroh's. It cost about the same as Bud, but was a cut above, with a much richer, hoppier taste.
Oh god, even back then I was such a fucking beer snob.
