I worked at a video game company in 1994, and we were in a competition to make a pitch for a 'Mars Attacks' game. The movie was based off trading cards that had come out in the early 60's. The cards were very cool, and depicted the attack by the aliens, mankind gettting slapped around, and then we rallied and eventually began to turn the tide in a war. The cards were pretty gruesome and were released as a serial story where you bought new cards every few weeks to see what happened next. The cards depicted citizens and soldiers being melted with ray guns. The martians were after our women, so there were some sexual overtones as attractive barely dressed women were being kidnapped and put in cages by leering martians that looked like they wanted to fuck them. Which was pretty racy for the 60's, on cards aimed at kids.
We were all in on making this game. But we didn't win the bid due to our price. After that shitty movie came out, we were glad we didn't make the game. We didn't imagine the dark and graphic nature of the trading cards as being a 'comedy'.
