The point of the saying is that you can't do both simultaneously. It doesn't really matter the order it said in. You cannot both have cake and eat it

You really can both have cake and eat it. In fact, it is near impossible to eat cake which you don’t have. Always hated that phrase - if you have cake the likely point of having it is to eat it, that this is dressed up as a somehow unreasonable expectation is in itself unreasonable. And Marie-Antoinette never even said the let them eat cake line that I assume this stupid phrase derived from.

You cannot eat the cake and retain it as well. You cannot have both states simultaneously. This is a simple concept.

Then the phrase should be you can’t keep your cake and eat it too. To have just means to possess, and to possess cake is a prerequisite to being able to eat cake.
