Dude, let me tell you - I know the girl, she is "awesome" - just "awesome" with dogs, which is why she's the NGO's trainer for service dogs. But from what I've heard, this particular dog went crazy on her and she just couldn't resist, and decided to adopt the freakin' mutt...and everyone is okay with that. It isn't at all how things normally work, but in this particular case everyone is in accordance...and I saw them both together at the store just a day ago, and they're SO fucking happy together...a great outcome for everyone....
The insane don't deserve dogs. I no longer give a shit about this "service animal" crap. Dogs deserve better than lunatics or drug addicts. And I never, ever want to be put in that position again.
Agreed. Same goes for police dogs. They're trained to be aggressive attack dogs that injure suspects in a manner that would get human officers fired, but if the suspect defends themselves it justifies lethal force, and the jury will be told about the cute innocent pupper the bad man hurt.
They use those dogs as human shields and even worse they often can't be retired into civilian ownership because of how they were brutalised during training.
I'm sure there's other purposes dogs are used for that they don't deserve, it stinks. About the only jobs I can think of that I don't mind are sheep herding and sled teams since they're more or less doing their natural thing.

Toy cleanup, child watching/entertaining, old-people helping, etc. There are lots and lots of perfectly decent jobs that a well-trained pupper can handle and not be abused.

I'm watching a doco- series called "Pick Of The Litter" about guide dog training... I don't think they would have hurt you, although I note you said service dog not guide dog so it's probably not as good a training system. But yeah, I hope you don't have to be in that position again.
