I like the ancient Egyptian method of wedging wood into a crack (snicker), then soaking it with water, causing the wood to expand, thus widening the crack and splitting the stone.

They claim to have used dynamite for 90% of the work. At 90% you've got the cheekbones defined, a nose, the mouth, and somehow carved out eye sockets. With bombs. That's a fairy tale.

I bet 90% of David was beat loose with a big fucking hammer. More than 90% if he came out of a rectangular block of granite. The other 10% was intricate chisel work.

I've never heard 90%, but if you weighed all the material removed to complete Rushmore, 90% from dynamite seems potentially realistic.

Wedge and "feathers". You can make very precise cuts if you know what you are doing. Dynamite would have left a bunch of pieces. Not sure why this guy felt he needed two but he got them.

Easier way these days is to get some expanding cement. Drill 1/2"x6-8" holes @ every 7-10" apart in a line with a rotohammer, fill with cement. Come back in 2-4 days and voila: rockin2
