I totally agree. I was aware of most of the players, but after I watched it the first time I had look up those I wasn't familiar with. It made it even funnier the second time.

I'm watching this again, after seeing it two years ago. This is very black comedy, but the paranoia felt by nearly everyone living the Soviet Union comes through real and palpably. Even those in Stalin's inner circle are fearful and paranoid, and the citizens are desperately paranoid, and with good reason. The purges and midnight police snatches were real, and it didn't matter if you were a citizen with full membership in the party and in good standing, you were still subject to being taken in the middle of the night, brought to a detention center with your family, and beaten and interrogated until your suffering was ended by a bullet.

This movie would be pretty grim if they hadn't lightened it up with some humor by making the inner circle look like a bunch of sycophantic buffoons, which was mostly pretty accurate.
