I've taken down foxes with a 410 and it was useful to fire one handed on a quad bike at crows that have learnt to recognize someone pointing a gun at them.
IME smaller gauges just means you need to be more accurate, which technically makes you a loser.
Military ammo makes a .223 a good caliber. If you are stuck with civilian ammo, go for .308 / 7.62x51 NATO.
10mm is a good handgun caliber when you are stuck with civilian ammo. Get the hardest, best penetrating ammo you can and do not worry about expansion. Just punch a hole through them.
