It's a proxy for Bing -- it uses Bing as a backend to get search results. You can verify this yourself. A search in Bing and a search in DuckDuckGo return the same results.
Searx is a good open-source alternative. It's a decentralized meta-search engine that sends it to different other search engines, while ensuring anonymity and privacy.
