I use to do medical coding and billing. I had to enter codes so the doctor would get paid for that shit. You know what's really fucked up? Insurance companies pay out on that code every single time, no questions. You enter a code for cancer screening, and they'll reject no questions asked. I use to input the wrong code on purpose so the patient's insurance would cover something that might save their life. That was the most soul stealing work I've ever done.

I sold catastrophic insurance to people for their lines of credit for appliances while taking payments for those appliances. During the month I worked there, they raised the pay-by-phone checking fee from $5 to $35 per payment. I made sure to be clear about it, but most agents just slurred their way through the dialogue to get a yes. Absolute predatory lending. GE Money…

I've been smoking pipes on and off for 10 years. I always answer NO when asked if I smoke.

This is one reason why.

You idiot, that’s still a billable assessment.

And now if your insurance finds evidence that you lied about your history, they can deny a claim. Hopefully you don’t get any complications from the smoking.

I don’t just want to be doom and gloom, so… https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK424937/
There ya go, now you can live longer and be healthier.

I was visiting someone in a hospital one day and an old lady in another bed was being grilled by a doctor and a nurse. She was in her late 80's, and her daughter was with her. They found cancer that had spread, so the staff acted like a police interrogation unit for half an hour to try to get her to say she had smoked at some point in her life. She was from some rural back parts of China, and had never had a cigarette and nobody in her family smoked, but the staff didn't want to hear that.

That was in a socialized medicine country. They can't prove anything about cigarettes or what caused your cancer. Not ever. Not once, but the belief and fear is so deep it has to win no matter what.

Yep. They did this to me a decade ago. Exactly this, a Y/N question became a consultation. The ex was pissed, called both and got that shit changed. That woman was an absolute bulldog when pissed.
